Why does winamp use so many CPU cycles? Is there a more CPU friendly mp3 player?

I'm using winamp 5.03a however, having just called task manager up i've noticed that it uses between 20-25% of the CPU cycles (P4 [email protected]). I've got into the habit of playing tiger woods 2006 with MP3s on via winamp and had noticed it was chugging a bit and therefore i am considering ditching winamp and using something that doesn't hog nearly 1/4 of my CPU time.

Any suggestions?

PS oh, is this amount of CPU usage for winamp normal?

Something wrong there. Task manager shows my active Winamp5 as using a constant 0% of CPU time. Try a reinstall of the newest version?

Seems strange, I use iTunes and it doesn't seem to use any measurable CPU time when just playing mp3's and only upto about 5% when loading in a new track from disk.

if you just want an mp3 player and not interested in the visual stuff you get with winamp, try foobar2000! great lightweight player.

Or try soritong, a great little player that can be used as a bar on the top of your screen. Though like the posts above even with songs playing winamp rarely stray's above 0% for me too.
