Why does Windows 7 System Tray do this?

Using Windows 7 Home Premium 64... I find it boring and too samey to have the task bar in the usual place. I fancied a change, so I put it on the side and that is where I intend to keep it.

However... there tends to be a gap in the icons most of the time. Sometimes if I close Explorer.exe and I reboot it, it realigns the icons and closes the gap. Which is what I want. Sometimes it just does it anyway... but most of the time there's that evil gap there which doesn't want to fill in.

Any reason for this?

There is a screeny. By the way, whilst I was reading a thread here, one done I noticed the gap in relation to this image on the taskbar had closed itself.

Thanks for any help.

It's a volume control panel... yes another. But I'm keeping it. Shouldn't Windows just scale so it fits at whatever position the bar is in?

Having a gap is a tad annoying sometimes.

I see what you mean an the moment you said 2x3 my head immediately "clicked".... on the other hand, why does it leave the gap there and why not put the highest icon on the left at the highest point, (currently ATI CCC) and then flatten the rest into a proper line. It's flat at the moment because I closed the other volume control panel, but I don't think I should have to do that. Anybody gettin what I mean by having the top most left icon scale higher and the bottom fill the gap?

:)

I'd rather not be spoken to like some thick ****... take another look mate because you clearly DON'T understand. ATI CCC is not at the highest point it's at a level point... now notice the gap. Now check this out...

Move the SB Volume Control right one, the Windows Volume control down to the bottom left, then the other slides over, etc etc, until your left with ATI CCC sitting there on it's own on the top left by itself. Then making it the highest point an thus not leaving any gap at the bottom.

Get it now?

I'll upload another picture in a moment with another program in the taskbar to give an example.

This is what I'm talking about... as another example... instead of running flat at the bottom the icons pile up. But if there are only 4 icons, they sit flat. So why with 6 does it not sit flat? Perhaps they didn't think about that happening or they didn't care.

Little things like that tend to irritate me a bit unless they are sorted. It's like "whyy... why oh why is it like that, stop leaving lil holes in my system tray" :)

:D

I don't like it at the bottom so I've moved it elsewhere, if you don't like my thread or you don't have any useful contribution then gtfo...

:)

And yet you want people to help you. Nice.

No I just want people to actually help but making silly comments... if that were to be the case I'd of not made this thread. Others are welcome, things like, "get linux" or "put your bar back" or "OD on heroin" are not needed. :)

After doing some testing, reading, and investigating, it seems that it just "happens". Simple solution, set all icons to "notification only", have none showing.

Damn

There's 7 icons not 6. The arrow to see other items in the system tray is an icon.

I never considered the lil white arrow to be an icon really... but still it should then have the white arrow at the top with the others sitting flat. Guess it's just a lil error. Probably end up putting it back after a few weeks of annoyance... lil things like that I just wished wouldn't happen lol.

Thx

What icon? The SB volume control one? - Nice joke about the ginger thing though (brown hair thx :) )

Someone said just show all the icons blah... so I did, an theres that hoofin great gap at the bottom again lolz.

That's twice now... how can nobody understand this? I'm saying, slide another ICON up, and flatten the bottom ones together. Basically just reversing what is going on except at the top not the bottom.

lol edit my wallpaper, tht made me chuckle... yeah windows handles it in a stupid manner. Surprisingly enough if you extend the bar on the bottom section and widen it, it does the exact same thing.

I've turned my icons off anyway I only had 4-5 icons there originally, doesn't matter which ones it continues to do it anyway. Just fancied a change on my desktop, jus messin about seeing how Windows 7 handles stuff... guess it doesn't do to well on icon placement. Or icons as a whole for that matter, seeing as moving my bar results in them disappearing. Forcing me to end explorer and restart it. :)

I was using double width at the bottom as an example... will this work with the sidebar too?

From time to time it has flattened, with a low level of icons, i.e 4. But when theres more... say, 5, 6, 7, it messes up an leaves a gap there.

Might just leave it at the bottom... tis kinda too familiar bein at the bottom, but im k with it. Just still don't understand why the icons must arrange like that... even at the bottom as well when you widen the bar. :) Check for yourselves
