Why not get an Intel ? An i5 4670K and Z87 board would be my choice if you are just gaming.

how do the two compare? or are they basically the same?

I think the 4670k is slightly faster when overclocked and uses less energy and heat.

No idea on how hot the FX 9370 runs, but the 4670k will be a pretty hot chip too so a decent cooler is a must when oc'ing.

In saying that my 4770k @ 4.4ghz is no hotter than my old 920 and 2700k setup

Unfortunately mate mine is a bit of a lemon, upto 77c in games vs 65c on my old 920 using the same k2 cooler.

If you have cooked that cpu you cannot return it. It's your fault and will have to chalk it up to a learning experience.
