Why doesn't my web site show up in Google searches?

I've created a web site for someone but they've noticed it doesn't show up in any web searches.
I develop web pages all the time, but usually it's internal content designed for us in Intranet/Extranet environments so this has never been a concern for me!

So - what do I need to do?

Not every site has one no. It helps search engines because you are telling them where your pages are, rather than relying on them finding the pages through their search algorithms. You are also able to hint at them how often each page will be updated (daily, weekly etc) and to rank your pages in order of priority- their own algorithms may end up deciding your key page to not be very important and so rarely scan it.

The site's been up and running for a week - I say site, it's only a single page at the moment.
I've registered the Url with Google, Yahoo and Bing for now + will create a site map as more content is pushed onto the web.
 
it's been up and running only for a week?!?!!? well that's partially why. google are quick to update but you wont get any results that quickly. would you be able to post the url on here? we can advise more things you can do to the site to improve seo.
 
Also if it's only a 1 page site it's very unlikely to be highly ranked unless it has masses of traffic - I'm talking upwards of 50,000 hits a day.
 
I agree with both the posts above, single page sites don't get ranked highly, and it takes far longer than a week these days for Google to start showing results. Linky would be nice, but I'm guessing that till there's at least 10 pages of content and it's been up 3+ weeks you're gonna be disappointed...
 
On a recently installed site, 24 of the 29 pages I submitted to Google Webmaster Tools on the 11th via an xml sitemap are indexed. The best way to get it ranked is build links from other relevant sites. You'll struggle with just 1 page tbh, content is king.

You need to manage your client's expectations. 1 week is not very long, and 1 page isn't a big site. Their 'website' isn't going to rank highly for a while.

I think the main problem for your website is that it is not indexed in Google ie website is not in the database of Google.
In order to index your website just add your website to Google search engine and submit your website to some directories and your website will be seen in Google in some time.
 
Get a link put on another site with a high page rank pointing to your site and watch it get indexed over night.
