It would make it much easier for customers to decide what memory to get if they knew what is in the SPD.

Yet I haven't seen a single manufacturer, even the big names, who publishes much detail about the product they are selling.

Because they would be cutting there own throat if they left things as they are now, where they sell higher speed binned parts are slower speeds. The information is out there if you know where to look.

Alternatively they would just end up hiding the faster settings on the slower RAM meaning the enthusiast loses out.

But the flip side is that I've just bought some RAM that doesn't work as advertised with my MoBo.

I can't say for definite that it wouldn't work with other chipsets but it definitely doesn't work on mine.

And the result is that I now have to RMA it back, which will mean that both I and OcUK lose out and I'm left with a poor opinion of that RAM manufacturer.

Cheers,

Nigel

The RAM does work it just won't work at the adverstised latency settings which enticed me to buy it.

It is advertised at JEDEC programmed at 7-7-7-24 @ 1600 @ 1.65V

But the SPD just has 9-9-9-9-24 @ 1333 @ 1.6V

I think that the JEDEC programming for this RAM is actually in XMP which is not accessible by all MoBos, including mine.

If I try and manually set it to the advertised it won't POST even if the voltage is increased.

One possible problem is that is that whilst we are all familiar with the main latency settings 7-7-7-24-2N, my BIOS includes a host of additional ones and I've no idea what they should be set to. Perhaps on an XMP compitable board these would be read from the RAM but on mine I have no clue.

Cheers,

Nigel
