Why don't Microsoft add more resolutions for LCD monitors?

A lot of people run their Xbox 360 through their LCD monitors, myself included.

The only problem is that the 360 doesn't support the optimum resolutions for LCD monitors. Most are 1680x1050, or higher. The 360 doesn't support any of these, so I have to put up with 1280x768. The games themselves still look very good, clear...etc, but text...etc looks slightly blurred.

It would be nice to be able to run my 360 at optimum resolution, why don't Microsoft add support for these resolutions? Is there any reason? (Eg. Technical limitations...etc?)

I think you have partially given the reason right here, limiting the number of resolutions to LCD HDTV's helps to boost their sales so customers can "fully" experience their games.

What have Microsoft got to gain by potentially increasing sales in HDTV's? They don't manufacture HDTV's do they?

Unless they have some kind of deal with HDTV manufacturers I can't see how they would benefit from limiting the 360 to HDTV resolutions.

Eh well, guess I'll just stick with it and hope for added resolutions in the future. I'm not about to splash out on a decent HDTV for slightly better image quality.

Every 360 game would need a patch to support the new resolutions. Also the games all render at 720p anyway (apart from a very few undemanding games that can do 1080p), so you wouldn't really gain anything.

Huh? Why?

And yes I would gain something. Because I can't display in my monitors native resolution the image isn't as crisp or clear.
