Why have OCUK not started stocking current generation Xeons?

I guess the only people who can answer this accurately are those of you who work for ocuk, but does anybody know why oc stock previous gen xeons but havent started stocking the E3/E7 chips?

I'm not personally interested in buying one of these chips as i really don't have the need or the funds, i'm just curious.

Also has anybody started making dual socket gaming motherboards for these new chips?

Cheers guys. :p

The current gen of Xeon's (E5600/X5600) don't have a the new Sandybridge versions yet (E5). They are yet to be released!

No-one is going to want an E7 for at home! The E3s are very fast though. OcUK isn't really a server builder either, pointless holding stock if people don't buy it.

Just looked up the E7 10 cores 20 threads 30MB of cache, very expensive! At 2.4GHz would these be much better than the current high end if the 17's?

As always it depends what you use it for. For massively parallel tasks I think it would be faster than both the 2700K and 990X.

I always wondered about those super expensive xeons. So what does a £1368.50 Xeon X5680 3.33GHz Westmere do that the i7's don't, and more importantly can it compete with the official overclockers uk elite gaming mug?

Well the i7s can't use dual socket mobos or ecc ram, and are lower binned.

The OcUK mug will run in an octo socket mobo and get 1billion fps on crysis ;)

Thanks, I've ordered 20 mugs as it's cheaper than the Xeon which clearly can't keep up. :)

the only reasonably priced Xeons like ever were the socket 604 ones right? can never remember their core codename, but think they were Netburst chips. all the rest I have ever seen are all insane priced...! :D

Edit: they were called 'Nocona'...what is it with this bleeding codenames?!

Nope not at all, there were actually some fairly competitively priced quadcore xeons a couple of years back. X3320(?) or something like that, low clockspeed/cache but good for overclocking, I think there was a bit of a shortage of consumer quads so some people snapped them up.

Some might argue they weren't 'true' Xeons as they were effectively just standard s775 chips but I know there was a short period where they made a viable purchase prior to Q6600 price drops iirc.

dont understand it personally

because you know if they stock a super overkill xeon, someone WILL buy even if its just for the epeen

yeah that was the 1P Opterons though, that were socket 939. they were designed for the whole idea of having a easily accessible server without the high cost usually incurred by a server. that and they were usually binned silicon so would overclock well! :D

The E3-1230 is not looking too bad. Based on US unit price they should only be a few quid more than an i5 2500K, have 4 cores with HT (so 8 threads), 3.2GHz, 8MB cache, 80W, Support VT-x & VT-d (with VT-d compatible MB), support EEC mem and have no inbuilt video.

Review here (servethehome).

Of course you need to pair it with a C202/204/206 chipset MB which could be an issue as most aren't geared up for SLI/Crossfire :D.

If you need to ask if a Xeon is faster, you don't need one! Desktop processors get blown out the water by server ones.

They are probably useless (or at least less useful than i7s) for gaming. They aren't designed for that.
