Why HD-DVD Xbox360

Blu-ray not as good as expected

HD DVD Edges Over Blu-Ray Format In Early Reviews

With new Blu-Ray releases earlier today of 'Training Day', 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' and 'Rumour Has It', Warner Bros. became the first studio to release the respective films on both (HD DVD last month) formats. A format enthusiast website has decided to do a 'review' of the films on the respective formats. From the three reviews, it looks like HD-DVD is the 'clear' winner overall.

Training Day Final Thoughts

Certainly, this Blu-ray release delivers fine video quality in its own right, but the format's backers will need to step it up if they are going to win the hearts and minds of early adopters over HD DVD.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Final Thoughts

With our second Blu-ray versus HD DVD battle on 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,' we again declare victory (although by a smaller margin) to the HD DVD verison. Most of the same problems we found with 'Training Day' on Blu-ray -- namely the picture cropping (though it is likely a player issue) and darker cast -- reappear again here.

Rumor Has It... Final Thoughts

I must say, our first Blu-ray versus HD DVD comparisons continue to yield surprises. I wasn't expecting to see much difference in video quality between the two formats with 'Rumor Has It...', yet the two discs did bear noticeable differences, with the HD DVD boasting better detail and a more film-like look.

Remember its not all about MORE content sometimes, but perhaps higher resolution content. Games these days may not be longer that their counterparts from yesteryear, but still need DVDs rather than CDs due to high res textures etc.

ahar good point, It will be good to see what the PS3 can do with it's Blu-ray disks but the high capacity will probably be utilised for graphical polishes, still, the graphics should look nice.

Just a point, but since all Blu-Ray films currently use single layer disks, I would guess the PS3 will use the same for games. This means, 25GB rather than 50.

But basically at the moment, HD-DVD actually has the upper hand on space. Combined with better video compression is seems like Blu-Ray might not be the current prefered format for HD video fans.

EDIT:

People seem to be under the impression that space is some how holding back what consoles are capable of. If the 360 had higher capacity drives, would the in game graphics look any better? No. The limiting factor is the RAM, the GPU and how long the artists have.

True - and how skilled they are of course.

Personally I wish there was only one HD format, just as there is only one 'DVD' format. Having two doesn't benefit the consumer in my view.
