Why I bought a Xbox 360 without even having played one.

Firstly I was never a fan of consoles, I had a Sega Master System II (the curvy one) a long long time ago but in all fairness I'd always prefered my PC for gaming.

Kainz on here had been going on about the Xbox360 for some time but the constant MSN barrage of 360 links, screenshots and "ooh its ace" comments didn't convince me.

The cost of upgrading/buying a new PC did.

My current PC works perfectly well, can play most games but it is starting to struggle, rather than throw £600-700 on a new PC (upgrading really isnt an option thans to motherboards etc moving on so much in 2 years). I went for the Xbox and joined the console crowd. I must admit, I haven't regretted it one bit and I've even found myself playing online FPS for the first time in a very long time :)

Reasons I prefer the XBox:

1. Plug and go, install and play, easy setup and easy to use. No faffing about getting updates etc, it knows what to get and with one click you have them downloaded. Essentially, ease of use.

2. Social aspect, I don't mean online. I can sit and play the Xbox with my mates, something I couldn't really do with the PC unless we made a LAN party weekend.

3. Less/no cheats. I'm not saying it's impossible to cheat online with a XBox 360 but I'm far less worried about it. Compared to Counterstrike etc on the PC which seem to be riddled with cheaping so and so's!

4. Cost. Yes cost. Game are slightly more expensive than PC but I'm finding a well known auction site is a good source for getting them for about the same price or indeed the members market here. I don't have to worry about continually upgrading my PC to "match" what other people are seeing. This was a major concern when playing games like MMORPGs, machine performance could effect the game far too much if your PC was behind spec-wise.

5. Space.. indeed! I'm actually now considering selling or replacing my PC with a lower spec laptop, ditching the desk and just having my Xbox and laptop in the living room. Currently my PC lives on a desk in the corner, I've never really liked this and the idea of having that extra space makes it very tempting to ditch it entirely! My PC is now only used for MSN, browsing, email and the odd file download. I haven't in the 3 weeks since I got the Xbox played any sort of game on it.

6. DVD player, the Xbox 360s DVD player turned out to be better than my own. The MS DVD remote is top notch and rather groovy looking so my DVD player has already been demoted into a box in the loft. I hadn't even considered doing this until I actually had the Xbox home! I've been told that this was a recent improvement to Dashboard.

7. Dashboard - it's fantastic, (see point 6.) and it just seems to get continually improved. I hope MS put the effort into this as it's a cracking system which I'm hoping will be expanded to include new features.

8. Network connectivity. I hooked the Xbox up to my XP machine within minutes and had my rather dodgy collection of MP3s happily streaming to it. I think this next laptop of mine might well have Media centre on it so it can combine even better with the console!

9. *mumbles at NokkonWud's post below* Fight Night 3 - Enough gaming reason to buy a Xbox 360 on it's own right there :p Or PGR3 for that matter, there you go, out and buy two of them so you can play them at the same time. what you waiting for? get a move on!

I'm sure there's more reasons, but these are the main ones. I wub my Xbox, I wub my console, I can't believe I just said wub.

Enough rambling, I'm delighted with my purchase! and I was bored at work during lunchtime ;)

I think you summed it up nicely! I dont think ive played one game really on my PC since getting the xbox 360. And usually with me i never turn my back on PC but i have with this! :p

Points 1 and 3 really ring true to me as a primarily PC gamer. Actually getting games to run correctly seems to be getting harder and harder (with DRM type stuff becoming more and more common), patching takes ages as very few places offer free, high speed downloads and patches just keep getting bigger, countless games are almost totally ruined by cheating.

Have to agree with everything in the OP. I have also not played any PC game since getting the console in December, infact i'll be selling my PC this week when I get round to backing up my stuff. I'll then be buying a cheap latop or putting the money towards a PS3.

As much as i used to love my PC for gaming, the constant expense to keep up means bye bye PC gaming forever!!

I too am a new convert and the one thing that finally pushed me to buy a 360 was another patch for BF2 on the PC. This patch destroyed the game I love and since using my x-box I have been pleasantly surprised. The graphics are great on HD. I have not touched my PC since for gaming.

The only thing that bugs me about x-box live is the lack of game server browsing and options, you literally get "Put" into a server.

same situation im in now really, not really an avid console person but really tempted to get one, just cant justify the amount of money on it will cost for the console and games :(
just bought a 2nd hand ps2 to keep me happy with just metal gear solid 2 and 3, should keep me happy for 2months and then maybe xbox prices will have dropped.
But reading this along with a lot of other reviews and what people have said, im leaning towards getting a 360, just £400 for a consolewith about 4 games is a lot of money to me, im only a student working part time at pizza hut over the summer!

Have to say this ( and have already said this many times ) it is truly the best piece of console kit I have ever owned and I hadn't owned a console since N64 was well into my PC gaming, and even better still the gf bought it for me hurrah and theres a 32" HD LCD tv on the way, happy days also welcome to the club. :)

Why would you want a 360 with 4 games?
You could get a XBox 360 Core Console World Cup Bundle for £224.99 inc p+p or get one cheaper from that good auction site like i did! ;)

True you dont have to get a premium/premier (can never remember) pack to start with. Heck I reckon they'll bring out larged HDDs soon anyway so the premier/premium (grr) pack will get updated :p

Excellent post Kami.

I was a PC gamer for a long time and was at Uni when the Gamecube was launched to bought my first console and have been playing it ever since. Once I left uni my PC went off and hasn't been turned on for gaming since, I use my works laptop for all my PC needs.

I'll be getting an Xbox360 around Christmas this year and it makes so much sense from a cost and space perspective.

Yep, couldn't agree more with what's been said.

I sold my PC and desk soon after getting the 360 and bought a simple laptop for PC stuff.

Really could never see myself going back now.
