Why I hate vista...

I have 1gb of ram for a start... :p

I'm using a (£400 at the time) laptop :p

horses for courses really, chose software to hit your hardware or vis versa depending on which is necessary.

Vista isn't meant to run on such old/limited hardware.

Can you run Office <2007 in Vista? Not tried.

I'm a linux user. I can't stand the user experience with MS products and MS's attitude to its users. :)

Attitude? From what i can tell, their attitude is "we've made everything basic for you by default, if you know what youre doing you can turn off loads of stuff and use it properly", suits me fine.

what's that got to do with the price of chips?

I never said you couldn't :/

Ok I know you've quoted me but you seem to be replying to somthing entirely different

Rigfht most people don;t need that customisation, and you still havent given more than 1 (very vague) argument against vista or any windows product.

Right, so you'cve managed to post all that and not answer the questions.

You still haven't given a single extra reason why vista is worse.

Okay so I install Vista right like yourself, and then I try to ssh into my server and FAIL. Okay then I think well actually I need to ssh -X into my server FAIL. Okay I dont want a bloaty front end so I'll use something less bloaty FAIL. Okay no problem Java and Perl will atleast be there by default right FAIL. Okay well I'll just open a a text editor that has some idea about code by default, FAIL. Okay never mind, I'll start working on a word document by default - no wait FAIL it word is expensive.

And it just goes on and on and on and on that way

I know.. For me xp/linux would be much more appropriate... My cpu isn't THAT bad... (T5500 ... I've always been a AMD fanboy too :p)

Also, dangerstat, you seem to be preaching why Linux is good. We all know its good at niché roles, what we all wanted to know was:

"What makes Vista BAD?"

It has let me down a fair few times in time critical situations, so I'm obviously going to be anti it. Like I say (over and over) it's not a case of me insulting Vista users.

I tend to find most people that say XP or Vista sucks either have broken hardware, out of date drivers or just generally fail at using the OS.

And any of these tasks impact on an 'average' user is any way how exactly? Sure, if you're a coder or you've got specific requirements then Vista isn't necessarily the best OS out the box but it is very adaptable, relatively stable, doesn't require much (any) technical knowledge to start using and has a vast array of software coded for it (let's not go overboard but a rough estimate of 75% of the Worlds software being available in a Windows variant doesn't seem unlikely).

For a long time I would agree with you Duke, in fact I was massively pro windows, I guess I tried to use everything since then to get a balanced opinion and in the end (especially recently) I began to see the reason that I was using Windows had nothing to do with the fact Windows was better, but the fact that I knew Windows from 3.1 inside and out.

Did I see someone bring up the "it uses ram!" point?

That bugs the hell out of me

Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Run a memory intensive program and vista will dramatically scale back it's memory usage.

It's a much nicer day to day OS than any Linux system, or XP.

Seconded.

Just because the OS doesn't do exactly what you want doesn't mean that it's crap.

Hell, I'd like Vista to cook my dinner and then wash up when I'm finished. Does the fact that it can't make it crap?

:p

No not at all but, but to be honest if your posting on an overclocking forum then your not an average user. I think the learning curve is steep and when your happy if your windows system it's hard to see why it's worth jumping ship to linux, but when you do and you stick at it, you realise what you didn't know before. Like I say I love XP and I have I'm using it now, but in comparison to the latest Linux distro's it's just poor.

When I purchase a laptop to simply work out of the box(Auto updates are meant to be on) I expect it to perform flawlessly. I can't be bothered to be dealing with driver errors and BSOD'S.

Which is probably the fault of the manufacturers' drivers, not Microsoft (though it would be nice to be able to recover from BSODs).

Post a recent file from c:\Windows\Minidump when it crashed and I/someone else can tell you the cause- i.e. which driver.

whilst on the subject, anyone else prefer office 2003 to 2007? the menus just seem easier to use..

Nope, much prefer 2007 to be honest. Far easier to use and to find the more advanced options, far nicer to look at, and it has some very nice features (like its references manager which is awesome for essays). 2003 feels clunky and awkward in comparison.

But you'd more than likely be a gamer, as that's why most people here have high specs, and oc'ed parts.

If you want to game then thats fine, use Vista but dont for a second think that Vista is a better operating system. That is my point. Linux is pants for gaming, but pretty much accross the board better at everything else, and the reason it's not good at gaming has NOTHING to do with linux but the support it gets.

I run the same XP I installed on my PC 4.5 years ago, never a single re-install, not needed it. I only use it to browse and for office and the odd old game. I love it, great OS. Vista on my laptop is just as stable, it's as customizable as I require, easy to use and doesn't slow the machine down unnecessarily - what more do I want? Could I be bothered with tarting about with Linux? No. That's because I have a mix of: Full-time job, wife, a life and friends.

The only time I've ever had problems with my OS was when I was using dodgy copies. Using originals and appropriate hardware has surprisingly positive results ;)

Lookswise... initially didn't like it as reminded me of Mac OS.

BB x

Vista looks nothing like OS X. Saying that is a bit like saying some fat bloke looks a little like Jeri Ryan of Seven of Nine fame. :(
