Why increase resolution?

Seems like ive opened a can of worms here lol.

Im really just talking about FPS and same aspect ratio with an increase in screen res.

My mates will only believe you can see more (as in more of the scene rather than just better res) if they can see two side by side screenies in which there is more available to see in the higher res.

i cant give them that due to my stupid computer im using so im stuck and at your mercy (if you have any!!)

Otherwise ill just show them this thread but they will tell me its inconclusive (as some people are saying you see more and some people seem to be saying you dont)

Sorry for any arguments im causing!

Now we have something to compare, if u take the screen shots of supreme commander a couple posts up, both show the same "amount" of stuff (excluding the widescreen vs 4:3 thing)

But Diablo does actually show more as the res goes up.

To me it would be more logical that the level of Detail went up with resolution, rather than the field of view. It seems it depends entirely on the game engine and how it draws to the screen :)

oops...I was wrong... :o

Upping the res in C&C3 shows the same viewable area in the same aspect ratio....

this is pretty interesting and thanks guys for all of your time finding these screenies.

Anyone got any idea how FPS shooters scale with resolution increases keeping the aspect ration the same?

Thats the game type my mates are saying you cant see any more in

Same thing seems to happen in vice city, this must be diff for each game, some games show more detail on higher reso, others show bigger view fields on higher reso's
Or am I wrong?

So long as the aspect ratio isn't altered there should be no extra screen space at a higher resolution. It's just plain unfair to players with the lower resolution. BF2 is a good example of this. While wide screen modes can be forced in the game, no extra field of view is added, the image is stretched to fit the wide aspect ratio.

In most FPS's you need to change the FOV variable to see anything extra. A higher resolution just renders the same frame in more detail.

I notice this....The 1680x1050 looks so much less detailed went swapping between the two fullsized screenshots i saved....

I couldn't belive how much detail was lost untill i done this

increasing res will only increase detail on the screen
it will not increase viewing range

a bit like comparing HD to SD its the same pic but with more detail

Well thanks guys for all the hard investigative work.

Seems like FPS just give higher res and clarity to the same FOV shot.

Whereas certain isometirc games allow a bigger play area if it dosnt give unfair advantage to the player.

Really interesting stuff.

Dam.
