why is DDR2 Memory so expensive?

had to buy a 2gb ddr3 stick for a netbook and it cost £8 delivered,

Then today had to order some ddr2, again a 2GB stick for a netbook and its cost £16

why are the prices so different?

Not a bad idea if you don't mind sitting on your investment for 6 years.

Technology tends to reduce in price once it production life finishes so inventories can be cleared down but once levels get really low and a product becomes rare prices go up. The reason being is say you have an old server that uses DDR2 ram and the ram is broken, to replace the server might cost £300 but to buy new DDR2 ram will cost you £80, it's a lot of ram but a whole lot cheaper then replacement of a whole system. The same hold true for CPU's, look at how expensive old Core 2 Quads are even though they have been out of production for years.

I just couldn't understand why it was twice the price, but know i see your point regarding production and the fact they've pretty much got you by the balls in the instance of if you have a server etc.

I know what you mean about the older CPU's. Before my Sandybridge build I had the old Q6600, which was a beast at its time and earlier this year I managed to sell that for £65 on its own! its mad how long ive had it for.

It's always been the same. I've part funded a couple of upgrades this way. At one point SD ram was silly prices and DDR was cheap

Supply and demand I guess, there's still a demand for it with people upgrading and repairing, yet there's virtually none being produced any more. Good news for us looking at selling lots of DDR2 I've got 8GB of Corsair XMS2 in mine, I've seen that sell for a fair whack in the MM still!
