Why is does www.rapidshare.com work but rapidshare.com not.

Hi there,

I know that "rapidshare.com" does not work but "www.rapidshare.com" does.....

....does anyone know why it is...something to do with dns?

just the way there server is set up.

All websites used to be like that me thinks.

www. is supposed to be obsolete

...it was working a few days ago....i thought that maybe one of their servers crashed or something....

noticing this more and more lately, sites only working with the www when before they were fine without. maybe the internet is broken.

tell me about it, i've seen sites advertising web addresses without a www. that don't work unless you add the www when you type them into the browser. must be losing thousands of uniques a week for the sake of a simple 301 redirect!

Most people would type www. first anyway, it's stupid to not have it redirect though.

yeah, espcially with the search in the toolbar feature so most time i just type something like ebay and thats it and then it will google search ebay giving first result, and then if i don't do that i usually type it into homepage (google) which gives me direct link to the site.

Do some sites not spread variations of their address to different servers (in order to spread load I guess)? So perhaps their rapidshare.com server had a blip when you typed that address in. Although I guess they ought to account for that and just make sure a working site comes up everytime.

currys.co.uk never used to work before (few months back)..
