Seriously I'd be Nintendos best customer if I could only buy their products. Christmas 2007 I wanted a Wii so hunted around all the shops and everywhere was out of stock. Now today I went around Middlesbrough looking for a Nintendo DS and same story AGAIN... unless I wanted a Pink DS with Nintendogs lol.

P.S I also saw a raise your own Baby game, it sent shivers down my spine. Imagine what would happen should that end up in the hands of any of our girlfriends.

Can't they be pre-ordered online or something?

Oh I know I could get it online and I will but just seems to me they miss just as many sales with people who change their mind or buy an alternative product. Looking around now both the big two online shops are sold out on the consoles by themselves.

The DS and Wii has been subject to high demand ever since their release, most people who has either had either preordered or reserved theirs. It's still difficult to simply walk into a shop and buy one, and most likely will remain that way for quite some time.

getting a wii for christmas isnt everyones ideal gift lol

A black and blue Christmas?

For the second holiday season in a row, the Nintendo Wii was on of the hottest products on the market. Walking into a Best Buy or browsing Amazon, one would be hard pressed to find the little white box before Christmas. Demand, fueled by the consoles image as entertainment for all ages, would lead one to believe that those fortunate enough to receive a Wii would welcome it with open arms.

However, for 26 year old Heath Blom of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a brand new Nintendo Wii was not good enough. After arriving at his grandparents house with his girlfriend, 24 year old Randi Young, Blom was outraged that he was receiving a Wii for Christmas instead of the $1,000+ remoye control airplane he asked his elders for. Upon expressing his discontent, Young called him out for acting like a child, and that's where the story gets hazy.

While both were taken in by police, it is unclear who started the physical skirmish. Ms. Young claims that after berating her boyfriend about his behavior, Blom grabbed her by the hair and dragged her down not one, but two flights of stairs. “He said he hated it. It hurt her feelings,” remarked Young, who said her boyfriend “told his grandparents that he changed his mind” about waiting until his birthday and wanted the plane for Christmas. “When he didn’t get the plane, he got really upset. He acted like a 10-year-old kid,”

According to Mr. Blom, a flooring contractor, he wanted the plane for hisbirthday, not for Christmas, saying “You can’t fly an RC plane in the snow." While he did make negative remarks about getting a Wii, Blom claims that his girlfriend threw the first punch, or rather three punches to his eye.

Either way, the fight was certainly not in the holiday spirit. Anyone lucky enough to get a Wii for Christmas, even if they don't want one, should have the brains to be thankful he or she got anything. Besides, selling an unwanted Wii on eBay isn't unheard of. Hopefully this holiday throwdown will teach both parties involved a thing or two about manners and being thankful for what you have.
stupid adverts mean i have to copy and paste

Yeah but I'd be more inclined to believe the lack of stock is forced rather than a natural inability to meet demand. If the demand for both consoles has been this high for this long (showing it is sustained) why have they not invested in more manufacturing plants? Also you would think with both consoles not requiring high end parts they would be easier to produce than say the PS3/ PSP or 360.

On a different note wish there were some more adult oriented bundles for the DS about. Right now every DS comes with Cookie Maker 6 or Cindys Dress Up Doll World 5 and some daft accessory box I'll never need! lol :)

I doubt Nintendo would deliberately slow manufacturing. They would love to be able to meet the demand, money is money! I don't know why Nintendo hasn't opened more manufacturing plants, but we have to remember that they have admitted time and time again that Nintendo has no idea how their consoles will perform in the imminent future; they are surprised everytime they see the high sales figures. This uncertainty on their part is possibly what's stopping them from increasing manufacturing, even several years after high demand for the Wii and DS began.

Its an artificial shortage, you fall over the ******* things all round europe. Last christmas, when you couldnt get a wii for love nor money in this country, every single mainland Europe supplier had them in abundant stock.

The European branches of a very famous online supplier eventually had to stop orders destined for the UK because people where buying 5 or 6 at a time en masse and sticking them on ebay.

Yep, myself and others I know bought some from Germany until they stopped shipping them to the UK.

Nintendo have a very strong opposition to over-stocking goods, and this has always been the case so I'm not sure why it's not more well known. For example. they regularly print batches of games (smash bros + mario kart on the GC are prime examples) rather than a continuous stream to avoid over supplying.

I'm surprised there's anything in boro at the moment, when I go down there the shops seem to be vanishing.

The demand and potential profit margins for those games though are a lot less attractive than their hardware (that also facitilates more games sales as well). You would think being able to meet their customers demand for their own hardware should be their number one priority, especially after all this time.

They have a monopoly on the device and so are abusing it a bit IMO, you can bet your bottom dollar that if a similar device came out that played Wii or DS games Nintendo would find a way to meet demand straight away. Putting business needs ahead of their own customers needs never works in the long run.

They've always done it with consoles and peripherals too. Someone always comes out with the abuse/forced hysteria by restricting demand but it's the way Nintendo have always done things, even when their consoles were less popular so it's certainly not abusing their market position.

Yeah I see what your saying, I guess theres no way for us to know for certain without us working for Nintendo lol.

In the end I got a Black DS from the net along with Mari Kart (£18.00) and Pokemon Pear (£12.99). Going into town today to pick up either Final Fantasy 4 or Mario 64 DS! :)

You just know they are going to release a pink Wii and well and it's going to be the thing to buy for 45 gazillion girls. Even though they already have a perfectly good white wii they hardly ever use, they will release a pink one and it will be lapped up.

I never even bother looking at DS games anymore, the sheer amount of tat games released for it makes finding any other game in the shop almost impossible.

To be fair, Nintendo ran out of the DS around 15th December and they have a huge back-order consquently...stock will be back late January. Oh and trying to find a Wii during Xmas time? Pft...your own silly fault. :p

I guess it's actually the shops fault rather than Nintendo's now. Probably don't want to buy shedloads of stock that they may not be able to shift at times like this.
