Why is my CPU cooler louder when using higher FPS?

I'm using Intel stock cooler and 60hz monitor. When I set in-game frame rate to 120fps, my CPU cooler is louder than normal. Should I change my CPU cooler?

At 120fps your GPU and CPU are having to work harder. Hense the hotter CPU temp and thus higher fan speed to keep it cool.

Any reason you set it to 120hz as its a 60hz monitor?

Are you sure its not say the GPU fan/s as well?

How old is they system? What sort of temps are you seeing?

Intel's stock coolers are renound for being loud and inefficient. Its up to you but a reasonably cheap good quality cooler, £20-30ish will make a huge difference noise wise.

How old is they system? What sort of temps are you seeing? 3 years old. Around 70c CPU and GPU temp.
Will it be not louder if I change to aftermarket cooler?

In theory, yes.

But in your case, it will make no visual difference as your monitor can display 60 FPS ( Frames Per Second ) maximum.

You would need a 120Hz monitor to display 120 FPS, so essentially you are telling the pc to process 120 frames worth of information, but then ignoring half of fit - Twice the workload for no benefit

I can't afford 120Hz monitor. My Intel stock cooler is not loud when using 60fps but is louder when using 120fps. An aftermarket cooler will not be not louder when using 120fps?

You are not seeing 120fps.

Your monitor cannot show anymore than 60fps.

You are needlessly running an extra load for no reason or purpose :confused:
 
Not necessarily - it can be beneficial in some games regarding input lag to run higher fps. (Such as CSGO)
 
But for me, 120fps is good for FPS games because of smoother gameplay.

What gpu are you using, l play fps games and l always Cap my gpu fps to 70 as my monitor is only 60hrtz.

A stock cooler is good for general use, but if you game for long periods most people get a better cooler less heat and noise.

Especially if the cpu is overclocked.

Not sure, but I think you'd be right if Free-sync or G-sync was being employed (so that GPU output FPS was being perfectly sync'ed with monitor refresh rate) but without that, there's no guarantee the two are in unison, and so higher FPS from the GPU might well produce smoother results.

Happy to be proved wrong, because I'm in the market for a monitor, and G-Sync is sooo expensive.
 
I have delay mouse movement by using Logitech M100 when playing 60fps FPS games. After I change to 120fps, the mouse movement is smoother. Is it because of the mouse?

What games are we talking about here ? One in particular?

There are a few games due to bad programming that respond to higher fps as it overcomes issues within the coding.
 
Most aftermarket coolers will improve the noise and cooling of your set up. Do you have a budget in mind? If you have enough space in your case you could look at something like:

Seems to have good performance for a reasonable price.
At the higher end you have big heatsinks like the Noctua D-15 and the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3, but you're looking at spending £70+ there.. not worth it unless you're going to be overclocking.

My only worry with Overwatch is it is both CPU and GPU intensive.

The noise might not be just the CPU....

I know its difficult but you might want to double check what is making the noise before you start spending money!

I hear the noise mostly from my CPU cooler. I put all my graphic settings to low in game and my GPU temp is 70c like that. Does GPU make loud noise during 70c?
 
Monitor the air temp going into your CPU cooler. I'm betting it get much hotter when you are running 120FPS than at 60FPS, because it's not the CPU doing the work but the GPU, and it's heat is heating up your case because you don't have case airflow setup properly.

So you mean there is no need to change CPU cooler? Do I need to install side fan to cool down graphic card so that the heat will not heat up CPU cooler?

Best way to find out is to monitor the airflow temp going into CPU and GPU coolers under load. Then we can see what the air temps are doing and try to adjust case airflow to keep the heated GPU exhaust air (assuming that is the cause) from mixing and heating the CPU cool airflow.

Usually removing unused PCIe back slot covers helps front ot back airflow and this usually helps keep the airflow to CPU cooler cool.
