Why Is My CPU Running So Hot?

hi guys,

i have a pentium4 3ghz cpu in my system that seems to run hot, at idle the cpu temp is 48-51c, ive even known it to shoot up during use, i never get any probs with my sys, nor do i ever smell electrical-burning smells, wtf is going on guys? & what can i do?

What cooling do you have for it?

*just a standard heatsink/fan that came with the cpu...

If its a Prescott then i think they all ran quite hot,if everything is running fine then dont let it bother you.

Sounds like the prescott core to me.

It was always stated that the prescott ran considerably hotter than the northwood it replaced (not to mention it was also slower at lower clocks than a northwood due to its longer pipeline)
