Why is my grafix card so HOT?

Although I don't regard 50C as high at all (universally), that certainly is for your particular model, though it would be unlikely to result in any damage. It's probably just where the right contact isn't being made from gpu to heatsink. If you can, send it back.

do you run multiple monitors? i dont know what the 7850 is like but running multiple displays on my 6950 increased the idle temps by quite a lot.

Single display 19 inch 60hz. What i've noticed fan almost always stays at 20%. When cranked it up to 40% temps dropped to 45. Get it off ebay past 30 days money back guarantee. Not sure if can send it to AMD? Can I?

he said 50c at idle not under load, 50c idle is high in my book but thats just me, i like things cool so i can relax andnot worry. My GPU hardly goes over 50 playing BF3. and idles around 30c.

is it a reference card that exhausts are out the back of the case or a custom cooler card? and have you any gfx card overclocking software loaded like msi afterburner etc.

send it back. 50 at idle is high.

Good luck with that and I won't be surprised if RMA is rejected because of it especially when you do not know:

1. Ambient Temps
2. Type of Case.
3. Cable Management quality
4. Reference or Non Reference
5. Case cooling
6. Fan Prodiles

Tis fine. If it's going over 90C under load with the fan speed at 100%, then you has an issue.

What case do you have?

How neat is your cable management?

How many intake fans do you have feeding air into the case?

Noticed a strange thing today. I've set fan profile of gfx to custom and so fan is mostly on 30%. Thus today after all nights rest the idle gfx temp is 30C.

How do you explain this? Mind boggling.

Questions need answers before problems can be diagnosed.

Case is haf x.

Cable management is neat (all tucked as much as possible at back).

2 intake fans 1 out.

So you've created a custom fan profile and dropped the idle temperature? Now you know that it's the stock profile not being aggressive enough rather than a problem with your cooling setup or the card itself.

Now you need to work on your fan profile in order to keep a good balance of noise and GPU heat output.

Then dont need to send i back then? Its working right! I win again.

Its getting hot because its not a green enough card, should have gone with a gtx 670... :D

Just kidding, if you left it over night then it might of activated "zero core" which turns the gpu off (well not off but basically), also the fan stops spinning.

So I'm guessing it went into that zero core state before so the fan stopped spinning but when you got back to using it again you weren't using much gpu power so the fan didn't start spinning again.

I could be wrong though. :p
