I'm currently using AOL and their 1MB ADSL line. I usually get pretty good speeds most of the time but since last week the download speed has dropped to about 250kbps. The upload speed is still about 300kbps like it was before (I think).

I've reset the router and unplugged/re-plugged everything in but there has been no change. I've contacted AOL who have said they will do a test on the line (which they say will take 10 days) and get back to me. I did my own BT automated test which said the line was fine although i'm unsure how thorough this test is.

I connect my Mac via ethernet and a Windows PC wirelessly, plus 2 laptops and they all have the same problem.

Any help would be great.

As above 1mb speeds are only around 125k, 2mb speeds are about 250k, i think he means hes on 8mb MAX if hes getting 300 odd k upload speed, your speeds will have dropped due to AOL's FUP, and their throttling etc... which came into effect on the 1st Feb, you must have used to much so they have FUP'd you, and started to throttle your speeds.

When I say download speed and upload speed I mean the speeds that speedtest.com gives me. When I download from bittorrent or Apple for instance I used to get about 30kbs and 60kbs respectively. Now it's more like 8kbs and 25kbs. I guess the speed test figures are something else?

I'm pretty sure i'm still on a 1mb line. I thought it might be throttling which is stupid since I don't use it that much for downloading files. A couple of TV episodes, podcasts, etc, per week. Definitely going to think about changing.

you got 30kb/s on 1mbit ?????

im on aol 1mbit and i have the same issue as you, however i still download at 115kb/s all day, and its down to 40 ish at night.

They told me my line will only handle 1mbit. Ive done numerous speed checks using attentuation etc, rang up bt, they all tell me i can support 3-4mbit.

aol = crap.

Cheers. Tbh, i'm not even sure its 1Mb. I originally signed up for 512k ages ago and AOL said they would upgrade this to 1Mb in line with the deal given to new customers. They said my area would be done in June. That was 2005. It's taken them 2 years to get this far, and recently I checked speedtest and it was higher than usual so I assumed I had been upgraded. Although I can't say I noticed a massive difference.

Tbh, i'm not that bothered about huge speeds; I don't download that much. But atm I can't even watch youtube videos without waiting for half of it to be downloaded.

Think i'm going to have to change.

Before we all get confused, 1Mbps (bits) downloads at about 120kB/s (bytes), and the upload speed is 256kbps (bits again) and so you'd get about 30kB/s (again, bytes).

That's the thing that is so unfair about AOL's FUP policy, they seem to throttle near enough everyone whether they are heavy downloaders or not :eek:
