Why is steam so BIG!

My Steam folder is - 73.3GB you have it easy :P

Pft is that all:

That pic is a bit out of date now, as i've got Trackmania Nations and Shadowgrounds Survivor installed now, so its prolly closer to 80GB :o

steam can run standalone (ie, from an external hard drive)

i keep mine on my icybox 390 now

It's not a standalone app. though, is it? ie you couldn't just plug your drive to another PC and start playing.

you can indeed. whenever you reinstall windows you dont have to do anything with steam, just run the exe again. add it to the startup folder or start menu if you like

Indeed. I just keep steam on a seperate drive to windows. Reinstalls of windows don't really cause any more hassle for steam than it taking an extra few seconds to startup the first time you run it.

You can run it off a non system disk wherever you want providing there is nothing it needs in the registry (and AFAIK Steam writes nothing to it).

Even if it did you can keep the keys in a reg file and just export them on the system when needed.

Remember that the Source engine itself takes up a huge chunk of space and that EP2 (The Orange Box) and HL2DM run on different versions of the engine so you have two copies of it. If you were to add something like HL2 to steam then you will notice that it won't add as much compared to if you installed it on it's own as most Valve games share common source engine files which take up a lot of the room.

Yep just Audiosurf, used to have HL2 and stuff installed but haven't reinstalled it since i cleared my hard drive up. Just chuck in the orange box on 360 now if I want a quick play.
