Why is the Q6600 so easily overclocked?

This is my 3rd self built pc and I must admit that I find it strange that I can overclock this cpu from 2.4 ghz to 3.6 ghz on AIR. Granted I need to push 1.6 vcore through that tiny chip to do it but it's stable and incredibly fast. My last cpu was an AMD 64 2.2ghz of which I was lucky to get 2.4 ghz out of it. But seriously... a 1.2+ ghz overclock without having to mess with watercooling or vapochilling?

You're putting 1.6v through a Q6600 on air 24/7?

....Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again.

lol nice to see you bringing this chap back to the real world. Really really unadviseable to run it at that 24/7.

*note to self neevr purchase anything from chaapa..... :D

Ok readings from what, and FYI putting more than 1.55ish volts through any 65nm cpu permanty will seriosusly reduce it lifespan especially on air, even if your only hiting 70 deg's.

/me falls over backwards kicking legs in the air and gasping for breath.

(the phrase, "we're gonna need a bigger fan" comes to mind.)

To answer the OP's question....I think it's just the same cores they flog for £Daft when they're clocked up a bit. Chipmakers are so cheap ;)

To answer the question he'll post next week...."no the RMA boys won't be able to tell you OC'd it....but the 1.6v may leave a telltale....4 small patches of recently molten silicon" ;)

Still a bit high for air, but 75c under load isn't anything to get worked up over.

if ya chip is decent you should be able to have about 1.475-1.5 in bios and show about 1.435 or somin in windows

I don't advise running over ~1.5 (and you shouldn't need more than that to hit 3.6 on most Q6600)... I've been running an E6600 @ 3.825gig on 1.65v (BIOS) using water cooling for almost 2 years and its still going strong but it could die any day...

You have had your monies worth though, especially at that speed, so kind of worth it.
I wouldn't complain.

Update... not that anyone cares but I dropped the vcore down to 1.4 and I am sitting at 3.2 ghz. I do require this cpu to last for at least a year! ;) Anyways, yeah I would never buy a 2nd hand cpu for reasons such as this. laf

In fairness even if it drops the lifespan down to 3 years, which I find unlikely, it would still probably last you longer than you would want it, especially with Nehalem on the horizon.
