Not sure about Mac, never used it, I assume it doesn't... Linux, nope, but Widows gets slower the longer it is on your system... Is it because the file system doesn't self defrag (Seriously MS it is almost 2017 make NTFS self defrag)... Plus, make Windows install like MacOS, just wipe & reinstall the OS files leaving the programs alone... I would love to reinstall windows & still have my programs... Or just make the registry less complicated, OMG!!! All we need is a SYSTEM tree & Data so we could atleast backup data & if our Programs were on another partition/drive, putting the backup back would be enough to have everything back...

What?

Since 7 I never felt Windows starting to become sluggish at all. Only times I do a reinstall if I myself bugged something up with the OS files or moving to a new drive/PC.

Windows also has automatic defragging, I'm pretty sure this has been around since Vista.

I can understand the reinstalling bit though, but it depends on how you do it. I had to reinstall a Macbook Pro about a month ago and it wiped everything on the partition including software. Windows is getting a bit better with the refresh option, but it will probably need a massive overhaul to properly seperate the OS data from program data.

I have never seen Windows 7 become sluggish (or need frequent reinstalls), in the same way that XP etc did.

As others have said an SSD eliminates fragmentation as a possible issue.

I wouldn't place too much stock in Defraggler - it uses slightly different algorithms, and has different thresholds to Windows built in process (e.g. it is more thorough, but defragmenting a large file that Windows has left in 2 chunks really won't make a lot of difference).

Again, it's bloat that you install starting during windows boot that slows Windows down, not windows itself,

Windows 10 can do this, not sure on Win 8.1. I've done this several times on laptops in the last week.

User error IMO. My install is as snappy now as it was when I first installed it nearly 7 years ago.

It is all about looking after your install and not infecting it or installing rubbish.

is op still using XP, then this thread would make sense. Defragged wtf.

however this isn't an issue these days and even the reinstall feature has existed for several years.
don't install lots of garbage and go into task manager - start up and turn of all the rubbish that you have probably installed.

Do I have to turn it on? I used Defragler yesterday & it was like 19% fregmented...

It's automatically on. The only time it's not on is if you're using an SSD, drefragging on a SSD is not recommended, Windows will use TRIM instead which is far more suited for performance/life.

I've not had to do a reinstall because of slowness since the XP days. It's usually the end user installing too many startup items which causes and issue. Try using CCleaner and nowadays I suggest buying an SSD.

Disagree. W7 is just as likely to bog down with time as Windows iterations before it.

Microsoft throw out updates all the time without seeming to bother testing what effect it'll have. The Windows O/S seems like a real hash job, they don't reinvent it, they simply redefine it and tack more rubbish on to it.

In this day and age installing updates should not require rebooting. And installing the OS from new shouldn't require downloading a bazillion security fixes which you have to babysit to see if they install correctly. The whole process should be slipstreamed.

Why is there not a barebones W7 loader that'll download the latest iso image from the cloud with all updates preinstalled, you go about installing it in 15 mins as oppposed to waiting hours.
