about to check a laptop for someone as they can connect to everything but not windows messenger. anyone got any clues as to why this might be before i take a look? maybe some typical stuff i can check first?

Check any firewalls on the laptop, make sure Messenger is allowed through. You may need to configure any external firewall / router. Seems strange though as it should allow that traffic as standard.

make sure that the port isn't blocked. Don't know if Windows Messenger needs a port but just search MS Website.

thanks guys, did all the things you suggested though before you suggested, and also many many more from googling a code it give me. nothing worked and i was ready to give up but decided just before i do i will close the zillion programs running in system tray and see what happens, low and behold it works.

from what i can guess it was sophos anti virus causing the problem but will never know for sure as i can't be arsed to test.

thanks any way gusy

uninstall the crap from your pc then

no-one needs 'zillions' of things in system tray, they're just hampering your performance
