Been trying to play some CS lately and i've noticed how incredibly irratic my ping is no matter what time of day.

I've checked to make sure no1 is downloading then i pinged google, now i'm pretty sure its not supposed to be this irratic:

Code:

Then i did a trace route to google and it looks even worse!

Code:

 13 247 ms	61 ms 118 ms 66.249.93.99

The router ping is a constant 2ms over a 11b wireless network so no problems there as far as i can see and 3ms to any computer on the network.

Is this just a case of NTL being really poor or is there something more sinister at hand?

Connex is 1mb

I'm no expert, but the first line of your tracert gives a huge time to get to a private address. What does 127.0.0.1 yield?

Is 10.4.216.1 your router address? I doubt your ISP is to blame if it's giving that length to trace a route to a private address. Is it a simple setup you're using (i.e. PC, router, modem) , or is there a proxy in place or something?

It's a basic setup, Just a NTL telebox > Wireless router then the downstairs pc is connected via cat5 and every other pc is over the wireless.

I have no idea what 10.4.216.1 as thats not my ip.

I've just done another tracert to google and it seems a little better but still it's not great, neither is my ping on CS still :(

 16	46 ms	52 ms	45 ms 72.14.221.104

What do you mean when you say "what does 127.0.0.1 yield?"

While i'm not saying the STB is your problem i'd genuinely consider getting a dedicated modem instead of using the one in the STB, appart from the fact the modems max out at about 1.5mbit so you won't be able to take advantage of the free speed upgrades being done now and in the future if the STB goes down you just lost TV & Internet.

Ping your router's internal IP and if it's still a problem try connecting direct to the modem, as that will rule out the router or other LAN based issues.
