In America, you can buy sony HD Crt displays, which from all reports have absolutely cracking pictures, especially for games (Pc, xbox 360).

Why don't sony offer these models over here in the UK? I want a HD set to tide me over to SED, and one of these would be ideal.

Because a majority of the public still buy TV's like all other consumer goods ie they walk into a high street store and go ooh that looks nice and then get out the credit card. HD CRTs are as big and bulk as normal CRTs so to joe public it's old technology and it aint sleek and sexy like a nice LCD. The truth plays little part in high street sales processes.

Theres a couple of CRT HD sets, my Tosh does 480p and 1080i (just not 720p) via component as does the equivalent Panasonic (PD30/PD50 IIRC). Also there's a Samsung slimfit set which does do all the resolutions but apparently isnt up to much but its cheap at around £450ish.
Like Pinkaardvark says, its not about whats good, its about what's trendy and people will rather buy a slim TFT to go home with and boast to their mates with.
Dont get me wrong TFT is fantastic when hooked up to a hi-def source or a PC but stick it on your digibox or freeview and its poor beyond belief in comparison to a CRT, unfortunately the vast majority of real people who buy them (not us nerds) are not using any of their true potential other than it being thin and wife-pleasing :)
