Why No Extra Time?

Hi, could someone please advise me why extra time was NOT played last night in the Chelsea Championship League match?

I'd mistakenly thought that if the scores were level (on aggregate) at full time, even though there was an away goal advantage, that the away goal would only taken into effect after extra time had been played.

Once Chelsea had scored their second goal I was looking forward to an extra half an hour's play.

Of course it's always good to see the French Beaten, Crecy, Agincourt, Waterloo, Stanford Bridge........

Thanx

I think that particular rule is only used in the league cup and football league playoffs. Most other competitions use the away goals rule after 90 minutes of the 2nd leg. In my opinion this is the fairest way, really disagree with applying away goals after extra time in the 2nd leg - by that time, the away team has an an extra 30 minutes to score a goal which counts as double which seems really unfair on the home team.

It's because they scored an away goal in the first leg.

So if after 90 minutes of both legs, away goals count as double

Chelsea Went through on away goal rule.

The only way it would go to extra time in the second leg is if the scores were the same in both legs and the away goals were the same

Thanx for your replies, that clarifies it for for me.

Planty: having read your post I agree with you and it seems much fairer as it is now.

Loki: Thankfully your last sentence explains my misunderstandings.

I would have liked to have seen an extra 30 minutes played, with the same result of course!

Yep, Arsenal got royally stitched up by that vs Wigan a few years ago, Jason Roberts scored in ET iirc. One of the reasons why I didn't buy into the theory that playing the second leg at home was as big an advantage as some make out.
