Why no GPU (single chip) like a CPU is???

Not really sure what your question is based around. The single GPU would be the one in the CPU wouldn't it, the GPU chip on a graphics card is also a single chip but needs additional circuitry not present on motherboards.
Andi.

Hmmm, they have CPUs with integrated graphics... I just thought it would be awesome to have a single chip to go in another socket, laptop mobile GPUs are basally that way right?

Think he basically means a GPU board is a like a motherboard, you then just change the GPU CPU. VRAM and such stays the same. So you just replace it with ATI or Nvidia CPU, like AMD or Intel CPU's.

Could be done but GPU's would need to be built from the ground up. With ATI & Nvidia setting a "motherboard" standard.

Newer GPUs will need newer faster memory so that also needs upgrading, which is not trivial given bandwidth. Then there can be new power requirements and cooler for example. For what? The actual card is cheap compared to memory and GPU chip.

I actually find the idea solid tbh. Have the GPU work the same way as a motherboard while selling prebuilt complete kits for people who are not interested in fiddling with it. I would not mind Titan XP class performance but right now i dont care about 12 gigs of vram as 8 is fine for me. I would be able to get that through this idea.

No different to changing system RAM.

Bit like changing RAM in the old cache IDE controllers.

Mate had something like that, stonking fast. Deleting or copying dirs with tens of thousands of files was stupidly quick.
