Why oh why did they move everything Win7

You can't do it in Win7 due to the heavy reliance on DD to draw Windows through the GPU itself (DWM) - Why do you want to turn it off anyway? I can think of any benefit from doing that.

I need to disable it to play Icewind Dale 2. Always had to with XP.

Guess thats out the windows as well. :(

Maybe if i turn off Aero ill get the option to shut directdraw off.

There's an option for Software-Blt in IWD2 isn't there? I think I had to turn that on, either for IWD2 or PS:T (both infinity engine games).

Never had to disable DD/D3D to run either of them.

Anyone know how to turn aero off? Cant seem to find away. If i can turn it off i may be able to turn the acceleration down in the trouble shooter part of personalitaion.

agreed. Quite a few things have been moved around. The firewall now looks about 10 times as complicated as it was before too. Loads of inbound and outbound rules. I like them seperating domain, home and public but they could have kept it more like it was before, just with this addition

People complained before that the firewall was too Simple and now people complain it's too complicated?

Heh.

The answer:
Hopefully it will help anyone else out there that still wants to play the best games out there.

Unzip and install

Run the following file

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft DirectX SDK (March 2008)\Utilities\Bin\x86\dxcpl.exe

Select the 'DirectDraw' tab.
Untick 'Use Hardware Acceleration' under 'Performance'

Bobs your god dam uncle!

Dont for get to enable it again when your done playing.

EDIT : I have a Win7 theme selected that does not use Aero, im not sure if having Aero type theme will have an effect when you turn DirectDraw off.

Right-click the .EXE, choose Properties. Click the Compatibility tab. Here you can disable Aero Glass and also other options to set the program to run in various compatibility modes.

The advantage of doing it this way is that it only affects that single application - not your whole system.

Where is the .EXE file?

Ah, i guess you mean the Icewind Dale exe?

have you actually tried to install/play Icewind Dale on W7 without disabling anything?

I found that some games like Theme Park World that was an absolute B! to get workin under XP worked almost flawlessly in Win7 with no tweaking or messing lol

You could always try an XP Virtual machine, I use Virtual Box for any stuff that is old / has to be XP. Works very well.

Hello there,

Have you checked compatibility?
Just an FYI for you.

It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7.
Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibility.)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx
There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software".

There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx

In any event a lot of the times, Vista drivers will work in lieu of Windows 7 drivers, however, it's not 100%!

As stated previously, it's best to have the Windows 7 certified drivers installed.

Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assitance and support.

Thanks again,
John M.
