I haven’t really been keeping up to date on the latest hardware, so can someone explain to me why the new AM2 processors are so cheap?

Cheers

Maybe to compete with conroe, if you cant compete on a performance level you might as well compete on a price level :)

HI there

You will notice though only OcUK has the staggering on the Athlon 64 3800 AM2, OcUK is approx £80 cheaper than its competitors. :)

Yeah, just noticed that. Very nice!

Does anyone have any benchmarks which compare AM2 to 939?

Was a thread around just now with a link, in some games you can expect 1-4% performance, otherwise its about 1%

I noticed the price Wednesday, now have one sat next to me aswell as some DDRII, just a shame a competitor kinda mucked up my order, blagged a free upgrade to saturday delivery though. :p

from benchmarks i have seen the new AM2 only gives about 2% - 5% increase in performance over sckt 989.

oh and HI, 1st post here :)

am still running a socket A 2.6Ghz o/c cpu with GeForce 6800Ultra card and is plays FAR, HL2, Quake 4 fine.

I have been thinking about upgrading for sometime but I decided to wait untill Vista ships and dual core become quad core :)

AM2 is cheap because it offers no real benefit over S939. The only reason for AM2 is because the market leader (Intel) has switched pretty much entirely to DDR2, and so AMD have to follow because production of DDR will slow down as demand does, which will increase the price of the ram.

I'd certainly wait until the Conroe launch, firstly to see what it can really do, and secondly because it's going to result in price drops on other processors if the performance seen so far is standard :)

£93.95 cheapers than somewhere else! meaning you can almost buy 2 for the same price as the ocuk sold 3800 :eek:

God god, and your still making profit on top of that?

Bravo.

Oh and expect prices to drop even more so amds are gonna be even cheaper.
