ok, got my i5 2500k yesturday and fitted it, i whacked the auto oc up to 4.4GHz (CPU-Z said vcore was 0.9** idle and 1.3** under load) and it is stable although temps are a tad high for my liking 75-79c during prime.
the 4.6GHz was also stable but after 20mins of prime it hit 83c so i stopped.
i think both these would be achievable with some voltage settings, but i just wanted to play games and try out the chip so didnt have a play. will have a better look on sat when i have a day off.
why does it get so hot? is the freezer 7 really poor or is this normal for air cooled 2500k chips?
when gaming they get to the high 50s to low 60s.

freezer 7 imo isn't exactly a big overclocking heatsink. Mild overclocks are ok but once the vcore is cranked up you need some heavier artillery. I got a 78C max temp on my 2600K at 1.39v 4.8Ghz with my NH-D14 with Intel burntest on Monday.. when it was 32C indoors.

yeh i think an upgrade is next on my things to do. i got the freezer 7 for my old 555 and it handled that ok, i guess this is a step too far for it.

get cpuid hwmonitor it does all your temps, also if you can afford the best cpu surely you can afford a desent cooler

thats not really how it works. everything has been bought in stages, and a decent cooler is £40+ so thats still a lot of money.
i will upgrade it when funds allow, but at this point it doesnt. if i had a spare £40 then i would have got a 2600k and not a 2500k surely?
