Why some CPUs run hotter than others

My E4300 has always run hot when under load, even at stock (idle 30, torture load 60). My stock hsf is barely luke-warm even after reseating, yet my back-plate is warm.

I discovered this thread talking about soldered vs pasted CPUs so I can only assume I have a thermal pasted one.
Here

Has anyone else got a CPU which they suspect is pasted instead of soldered? What are your temps and does an aftermarket HSF improve things?
 
I tried this with a socket 754 cpu, cant remember exackly wich one and ran it with out the heat spreader with the cpu chip in direct contact with the heatsink. it never really made much difference and it died a year later.

Any time i got a aftermarket cooler for a cpu temps have improved massivley and i have been through loads of amd and intel cpus.
 
Tried it on my E7200 but it just wouldn't come off although it was listed as pasted IHS on that forum, in fact I made a post in that thread about it.
 
My E7200 is also not soldered, no matter what cooling I use (water colling or Prolimatech Megahalems), it always shoots up under Orthos load to ~70C at 1.48V

For this reason I am thinking about getting a E8x00 as they are soldered
 
Just because it's soldered doesn't mean it was soldered properly.

Just like in everything else there are CPUs that have high VIDs, CPUs have bad connections to the IHS and CPUs that have concave IHS's.

Intel's specifications are wide enough that they can sell all of these and no-one can make any claims because the issues only become apparent when you use them outside their normal operating parameters eg. overclock them. If you want a guaranteed super-duper CPU, buy an Extreme series. They are thoroughly checked over before being boxed up.
 
why spend £18 on a AC freezer when you can get a top end HS for £20-25 on MM
All the OP needs to do is enable his trust (see FAQ)

In fact based on post count and date of joining I'm a little surprised he managed to resisted the push this forum gives to upgrade your cooling :D
Back plate on a stock cooler - bolt mod maybe?

The issue with E4x00, E5x00 and E7x00 CPU's is the contact between the die and heatspreader, if that isn't good the heat isn't transported to the heatspreader and it doesn't matter how good a cooler you use.
 
completely agree - but it must be a relatively small sample or they wouldn't be the popular OC'ing chip that they are.

edit: If your putting 1.5v through a E7200 it will get hot - At stock speed most will run on 1v or below - so your pushing 50% more voltage through to hit 3.6.

Surely the point of OCing is to take a cheap chip (£40-50) and get the performance of a high end chip (£150+) with the aid of better cooling (£30)
But it's still a cheap chip - there are manufaturing reasons for that.

Back on topic -

- Also the high stock temps at load maybe due to an uneven IHS (as 30c idle sounds quiet hot too)
- Or housed in case with poor air flow
- Or maybe the mobo is overvolting the chip
- Or maybe its to much cheap TIM / air bubble etc
- Or maybe its a dodge sensor
- Or maybe his ambient temps are 28+ lives in spain / wife has heating on all the time / pc in direct sunlight
- Or maybe his cpu only just passed the quality control.

Way to many variables to just say its a poor pasted IHS

I had a Q6600 that hit 100c under load - is your Q8200 hotter that that?

Don't compare temps, unless both chips were in same setup.
And some cpu ARE special - most are average.

The link above says the Q8200 is soldered so you need to look else where - first stop would be IHS flatness and VID

Exact same setup, same TIM, everything. I shall investigaet further:P

Now that is intresting (simular clocks and volts?)
Was miffed when I moved from P35 to P45 and my system power usage went up (with identical volts set in bios)
Wasn't quite what I was expecting.
