Is this actually true ? Not defending the paper but surely someone at the organisation would have noticed how messed up that would be if they actually made that their icon

Yes it's a bit Nazi, but even if they changed the colours, it's still a dreadful logo.

I honestly think I could have done a better job, and I only know how to use MS Paint lol

The Torygraph should have just used the big T symbol (like in the OP's picture/link) on the white background, either as an upright square or a circle (transparent PNG). The square at 45° and the red does make it a bit Nazi like others said.
