It's actually pretty good value when you take into account the ultra frikkin amazing 27" screen you getGotta be worth £700+ just for that.

Because some people have the mentality that likes paying over the odds no matter what it is and even if it's not worth it.

Because it is a locked platform and so Apple can charge what they feel the market will bear and still give them maximum profits. If you want the Apple OS then you are locked in to their hardware, so effectively a lack of competition in that particular niche.
They're not 2560x1440.
Don't like it? Don't pay it, job done. Not sure what the issue is, not as if you are starved for choice in the PC marketplace. Unless you really, really want OSX then there are plenty of cheaper ways of making a PC.
