Why the Wii needs to fail!

I've been bored with the gaming market for years. Like many of you i've been gaming since the days of the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum (since I was 5 years old). There's nothing new anymore, people keeping going on about this game and that but its all just the same as ever. I've been looking for something new for a loooooooong time... and thats the reason i'm choosing to get a Wii over the PS3 or 360. Neither of the latter for me has anything worth investing in, apart from hardware and if i'm buying a console for hardware, i'm buying it for the wrong reason. The Wii for me is a triumph in what is quite frankly a very dull and drab console market.

However every is entitled to their opinions. Each to their own...

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Just one thing ive wanted to get answerd for a long.

The Wii gets a heap of credit for creating interactive gaming and the way its games get played by the movements of the users.

Now i wouldnt mind so much but it seems that Sony are getting almost no Credit for doing this with the Eye Toy WAY before the Wii was realised.(And not to mension the old old arcade games like the shooters and stuff, they were very basic by they had all ready done it Way before the Eye toy even.)

I think the Wii gets too much credit for something that had already been done TBH and its really how it got Advertised that got it so well known and made so many sales.(like people said, Too people that had never played a game in there life)

/Hides from the raging hoards of angry flaming Console forum members

By the same reasoning what about the SNES console being online in 1995? Most people dont even know the facts let alone give credit, Nintendo have been the main innovators in video games, period.

Edit: Sega should get a mention for their arcade work, just compare Sega arcade racers to the poor efforts on the PC in the late 80s and early nineties. Nowadays you get the PC snobs bashing any arcade style racer as being rubbish.

Theres too much snobbery over what are basicly toys, and I would include any PC game in that.

tbh a "hardcore gamer" would not want the wii to fail

no

we want all 3 to fail and everyone embrace the pc.

they say a PS3 cost roughly what 800 bucks a 400 quid loss on the console everytime someone buys one.

your telling me i cant build a pc for the same price that would spank the ps3 lies!
what if they built them(quality boxes) and sold them at half price and made thier money on the games with really strict piracy so we had to buy em.

technology would be superior nintendo bringing zelda to dx 10 :O

stick in a overclocked conroe, 8800 GT and 2gb of ram and a small hdd into a htpc style case and market it.

it would be gaming heaven tbh some have predicted the phase out of the console in a few years time hopefully its true as much as i love nintendo the original poster has a valid point,

the wii's sucess is down to the legendary nintendo "fun games" and the controllers. for 200 quid no thankyou i think ill miss this one out sadly just to prove a point.

and no the point isnt im a graphics whore either :P

its nintendo could easily of made a system to rival the ps3's graphics and still had the controllers.hell they would probably kill off both sony and microsoft pretty quickly.ive owned almost every gaming system from the commodore 64 to the ps3(which imho is good for exclusives(all 2) for blu-ray's) and until it happens we will be drip fed for many many years to come in the console market when the pc one is already showcasing the future right now with almost photorealism gaming.

Oh please, what a load of rubbish.

Serious gamers (and i consider myself one having played for over 23 years) only want to play decent fun games. Anyone who claims to be a hardcore/serious gamer and says what you say are talking out of their backsides and I guess have very little understanding about what makes a good game.

Its stupid snobs like you and the OP that keep these pathetic threads going time and time again. Oh my machine is better than yours! boring, change the record.

Oh, and its very hard to understand what point you are trying to make when you talk in bucks and quid, please, pick one currency and stick to it. Preferably GBP seeing as the majority of the forum members are british.

oh dear ive upset a troll

for someone playing for 23 years u really need to get a life and stop attacking people

who mentioned anything about my pc is better than yours etc?

any idiot knows a single box solution would be better overall for everyone anyone who says otherwise is like you an idiot.

u even felt the need to pick on me using bucks tbh i didnt even think it would bother anyone @ 4am "british time" but a twisted git like yourself.

So come on then come up with a fully working PC for £350 (the cost of a PS3 now) that will be much better than the Sony creation?

People keep on saying stuff like this, and yet when you get down to it, with even a d/c cpu, gfx, mobo, ram, os, hdd, case, psu (not even including a br player of course) I think you would struggle and have to compromise not to mention wireless mouse and keyboard

Im not saying the PS3 is god's gift, but even a half decent pc approaches £500 at the least to get it up and running.

Not a troll, just someone who is fed up with listening to fools like yourself spout utter rubbish.

I never mentioned anything about your PC being better than mine, I was referring to the whole PC vs Wii vs PS3 vs 360 debate that is always going on. Something which you did in your 3rd line of the post I first quoted "we want all 3 to fail and everyone embrace the pc."

any idiot knows a single box solution would be better overall for everyone anyone who says otherwise is like you an idiot.

Wrong again. A single box solution would mean that you would only need one type of gfx card, one type of CPU etc. This would obviously put the competition out of business. Without competition there would be no need to develop newer technology and software at such a fast rate meaning that the hardware side of gaming would become stagnent.

Oh, and if an idiot knows a single box solution would be better, and anyone that thinks otherwise is an idiot. Are you saying that everyone is an idiot?

u even felt the need to pick on me using bucks tbh i didnt even think it would bother anyone @ 4am "british time" but a twisted git like yourself.

I was just stating that perhaps if you used just one type of currency then perhaps people would have some clue as to what you are talking about.

Has anyone found any games on the Wii, other than Wii Sports, that they just keep going back to? When i had my Wii i had access to all the games and just didnt find anything that would keep me going back.

The only issue i have with the Wii is nothing to do with the console, it is by definition a next gen console. It doesnt need uber flashy graphics, but SMG looks good and not out of place in the current HD era. Its the third party software that worries me, sure there's some good 3rd party games but you're starting to see a trend of shovel-ware games coming to the system. Looking at the PS3 / Wii games as both consoles released at the same time there are more games on the Wii but only 14 of them are AA rated where as the PS has 37, I know ratings dont mean that much but it was just to get an idea of the general quality of software, although the Wii has higher rated exclusives. The 1st party Wii games are great and I think SMG will be GOTY this year, but it seems like the third parties just want to put PS2 ports on the Wii with motion controls in many cases. As seen by SMG and MP3 the Wii is far more capable than just shoddy PS2 ports, so if a company can sell loads of cheap to make games on the biggest selling console why would they bother spending a lot of money on more expensive games for the other lower selling consoles? If this trend holds true this gen will be full of poor quality games with only the 1st party titles shining, not good IMO.

If you are a serious gamer, then the Wii needs to fail..

Currently it's at the top of the next gen. Nintendo's shares have soared, the thing is a massive hit. It's brought Nintendo back into the non-portable console market. BUT the thing is it's a last gen machine that has a few fancy tricks up its sleeve.. Namely the nunchuk and a few innovative games. Nothing more !

What does this mean to us the serious gamer? Well going by what nintendo has done, then why should Sony or Microsoft bother taking technology further for their next console. They'll think lets save millions in R&D and just slap on a few innovative gadgets and market the thing like it's the next best thing since sliced bread.

Since gaming began, I've always been excited at the new technology and what its brought into gaming. Namely graphical prowness. I think the Wii is bad for the gamer. If it's a commercial success, then others will follow in its trail, and the next gen machines will not cost as much at the sacrifice of the latest techology.

Don't get me wrong. I love games and gaming, and hats off to Nintendo.. But my opnion is if it's marketed as next gen, then that is exactly what it should be. My worry is that next gen will no longer be something to get excited about.

The wii wasn't and has never been advertised as next gen, even Nintendo have stated this themselves, they said right from the beginning in their first press conference that they are concentrating on game-play over HD graphics so your whole post is void tbh.

If I can afford it (and can actually find one to buy) I will get a wii for Xmas with Galaxies and maybe one other game and just await LucasArts offerings next year :)

if you regard graphics higher than gameplay you arent a serious gamer by any stretch of the imagination to be painfully frank

or are you seriously incinuating that games like Psychonaughts, Half Life, AVP etc etc... are poor now just because they have dated gfx?

(big sweeping statement) it's the current generation of gamers who want graphics over content that are dragging down the standards of the industry imo, just look at Crysis and the praise its getting. It looks visually stunning, but the game itself is actually average at best (imo ofc). i met this kid who prefered Crysis over half life "because the graphics are crap (he used a naughtier word) in hl", which pretty much sums up the new games market, and who they will be aimed at

Oh good lord, this thread has gone so, so bad. Please, for the love of your own self-respect, stop trying to define "serious" gamers, and whether you are one or not. It's embarassing.

Nobody says "Oh I'm a hardcore book reader!", or "I'm a mature TV watcher." They just get on with reading books and watching TV, and don't give a stuff about desperately trying to define themselves into some handy little niche.

I play video games. You play video games. Everyone else in here plays video games. We have different tastes. That's where it ends. I couldn't give a flying **** how long each of us spend doing so.

It should also be noted that Sony hyped up games like Motorstorm to be 60FPS and 1080P as the next gen standard and failed miserably.

Similar thing happened on the 360, with early games not being rendered how Microsoft wanted to set the standards, and many games are very dull looking to help with frame rates.

Specs on paper are one thing but the machines wont really be pushed for another couple of years.

except it would have cost more, it wouldnt have made them the profit the wii is.
You do know the wii makes them a profit every time one is sold?
Its spot on tbh, its just a shame it looks crap on most HD tvs

No but people do say "I am a book worm!" or "I am a TV addict!"

You may not give a stuff about how long people play for but some people do, personally I dont think that a casual gamer who only plays for 2-3 hours a week has the same understanding and experience as someone who plays 30+ hours a week.

If we had been discussing driving who would you listen to more? The person that does a 20 min round trip commute every day or the taxi driver that drives at least 9 hours a day.

Many people on here are serious/hardcore gamers, they have owned several computers and consoles over the years and played many types of games. Their opinion in my eyes means more than someone who thinks his 360 roxors his boxors because it can do pretty gfx.

They could have easily make it an expensive flop if they did that.

They made N64 and Gamecube which were more powerful than PS1 and PS2 yet they didn't do well in the market.

Adding motion sensing control to already expensive console would be a big risk so they took less risky route with cheaper console + lowly graphic and see how well it goes. Wii did very well but they did not expect a huge demand for it.
