Hi guys - interested in having a look at linux... but why would I use it?

Photoshop is one of my main needs... what does linux offer people that windows doesn't or is it just around for diversity?

I like the Linux environment, but like you, I use photoshop so need Windows too. I don't get on with Gimp. I also do a lot of writing where I need to referencing/citing/bibliography software. I know there are Linux/open source ways to do this, but I have accounts through my uni on software that I can't seem to get to work on Linux. Also I find Outlook is better than Thunderbird.

But for normal browsing and just a nice environment in general, I really like Linux. I used it over XP quite a lot, but now that I have 7, not so much. I just wish I could find a good way to have multiple workspaces like Linux - I really miss that. The 3D cube was sweet.

lol :o  (hoping this is meant as humour)

Well it wasn't meant as humour, you telling me you can play COD on Linux? and play it properly? as in, install and play without anything like Wine or Gimp installed?

It's great for servers, but for everyday use I found it too much like something trying to play at being a full on OS.

My favourite thing to do on Linux was update apt-get packages

Linux will never compete with Windows or OSX, it hasn't been comparable since the early 90's

I wouldn't want to play COD on my Windows pc nevermind on Linux so I don't really see the issue. Linux and Windows are both perfectly suited as everyday desktop os's depending on what you need a desktop os to be.

I don't expect Linux to function as a Windows replacement, more an alternative which provides a different way of doing & presenting things, and it's fun :)

the thread is about using linux as a desktop os
no-one mentioned 'gaming'
what does gimp have to do with running windows games (there are also native linux games tho so u don't need wine)

linux is used in: htpcs, desktops, servers, firewalls, ereaders, android devices, tv's, gps satnav, dvr systems, cctv systems etc etc.....

I didn't know this thread was about comparing operating systems  the OP just asked why people use it as a desktop os

I would guess that's a question best answered by people who use it as a desktop os

I used it as a dual boot with windows 7 on my netbook for ages, it was purely for novelty value/to learn about it.

I think that's the main problem with most new users.
They think linux is a direct replacement of windows and think it should act, look + feel like windows :(

Here are some reasons I use Linux as my main desktop OS:

It's more secure.
It's less resource-intensive.
Kontact is the best PIM I've ever used and frankly I'd be lost without it.
It's a piece of **** to find/install/update programs.
It's infinitely more customisable than any other OS I've used.
Bash/the terminal is incredibly powerful.
I believe in the principles of FOSS.
It outperforms any other OS I've used.

There are many more reasons but that'll do for now. :)

What's the problem with having Wine installed?

You kidding?

I use windows at home simply because of games.

I use linux in work as it makes me far more productive, once you learn the power of the cmd prompt and are able to chain basic tools together there's no going back.

If your thinking about using it

.... why don't you load a linux OS as a dual boot option onto your current desktop machine.

Try something simple and easy like Linux Mint 12 and explore...... please guys don't flame or rage :) .... it's just a suggested starter flavour :)

That way you can have a cross over period and alllow yourself a bit of time to explore... break it (you will) ... fix it ... and just have a go !

It's the set-up I use on my No2 rig which I use for all my main, everyday and mundane tasks. If I want to do something and not hand out cash for a 1 off task... eggs are eggs I'll find a open source piece of software that will nail it first tiime.
