TLDR kinda, Virgin spray my street, they send a letter stating few weeks installing process, i call virgin, get told to give sky 30 days notice, cancelled my sky on a GREAT Deal as i've been with them for almost 20 years. The 30 days were over, no installation had started at all, in the end after getting thrown around get told that construction won't start till November this year and that isn't guaranteed it could take another year or so.

Hey guys so I've been patiently waiting for Virgin Media to come in my area for quite a long time now. I stated in my other post from a little while ago that every street outside mine has been connected to Virgin for YEARS.

The box they run all the cables to is right outside my street so i'm not entirely sure it would be all that hard for them to dig up my street and connect it to the box (If that's how it's done i'm just assuming)

So early very early January a couple of gentlemen started spraying the corner on my street and out side my house and a couple of other area's of the street. I asked him what the spray was all about and he said it was for Virgin to start cabling my street.

I was quite excited as I've been craving and been wanting to move out of my area for better internet connection for a long long time. 2 days after the spray had gone down i received a letter through the post from Virgin.

The letter stated "Hello, In the next few weeks, we'll be connecting your street to Virgin Media's expanding network. When we're done you and your neighbours will have access to our award-winning entertainment services-including ultrafast up to 200mbps fibre broadband and Virgin TV."

So i ring Virgin and get explain that i'm very interested in their services and want to place a order for the VIP package. Got asked by the sales person who i was already with, i replied Sky, he told me to cancel them as i needed to give them 30 days notice.

So i cancelled all my sky services looking forward to virgin as i was told to my the sales person.

5 weeks later and still no construction has started, so i start getting concerned here. So i called back asking if i can place a order, they check the system and they put me through to construction, construction then say "we need put you through to sales"

So after explaining my self about 3 times already to 3 different people about wanting virgins services and i got told to cancel and now i'm without broadband etc, they then want to send me back to construction. (I think you see where this is going) So i get messed about for a good 40+ minutes explaining my self over and over.

No one could help in the end. All i was wanting after i initially explained my self was some sort of ETA of when the construction would start. I eventually got put through to customer services promised a phone call back by the end of this persons shift that ended at 9PM.

I never got a phone call back with a update, next day comes i phone and basically get thrown around again for 1 hour+ so i'm quite annoyed at this point. Get promised a phone call back in 72 hours. Guess what no phone call back.

Ring back again for a final time get promised a phone call back in 72 hours again, FINALLY I GOT A PHONE CALL BACK!

Bad news though after speaking to the "Lighting team" Construction is planned to start around November so that's another 9 months. I'm thinking okay at least i'm going to get it in the end. He then ask's for the reference number at the bottom of my letter i give it to him not sure why he needed it.

Just before he puts the phone down he said "The date is around November time and they can't guarantee that it is November it could be another Year or so" and puts the phone down.

So what is the point of them spraying outside my house etc this early and sending me letters stating in the next few weeks when it might not even happen this year at all?

Now i'm without broadband or T.V after listening to the sales team, and the letters they sent and the spray paint. What do i do try go back to sky or just hope he is wrong?

i know a few ppl in barnasley and doncasted that have there road and house marked up for the install team to come, only to be told at a latter date virgin is not in your area.

Good for you this is not a super bad thing. Ring sky and say you was offered 50% off for 12 months if you come back to them and they will sort you out. this is the offer they made me last week after cancelling with them

First of all you never ever cancel your current provider until you have an install date with an engineer booked in. who cares if they overlap? at best they will overlap by 2 weeks usually never. so at best you will have 2 services for 2 weeks, not a huge deal and your then guaranteed to not be without any services like your current case.

Step 1 - Get install date and engineer booked in (it's never closer than 2 weeks away usually)
Step 2 - Cancel current provider for the closest they can do it after the install date in Step 1
Step 3 - Not lose any services

Wait, so you cancelled your services before Virgin had even been enabled?
Additionally Virgin have done you a favour, their internet backbone is widely and heavily over subscribed and it simply not fit for purpose at peak times so unless you you work shift patterns and don't plan to use the connection between 4pm - 12am, avoiding them like rabies is the best advice I can offer.

I'm not sure why you'd cancel before anyone had even dug the road up - 30 days to dig, lay ducting, repair, release to the teams who can badly string a cable across your garden and into your house is overly optimistic.

And of course the person on the phone said cancel Sky now, they work for Virgin Media. Nobody who you can speak to on the phone at Virgin Media knows anything.

I cancelled my services based on a letter, spray point, being told by the same people that sprayed my street they are usually back within 3-6 weeks of spraying. and that i needed to cancel my sky as it would be installed in a few weeks based on what the letter said according to the gentlemen i spoke to.

Lesson well learned, i guess i jumped the gun and end of the day it's my own fault i guess. Looking back i wouldn't of done it again.

Do you think it's worth me giving it another week to see if it does get installed? As i don't understand why i would get a letter and spray paint this early in the year if it isn't going to be done for another 9 months.

It just makes zero sense to me personally.

Or should i just rejoin sky?

It's not a question anybody can answer. If you're happy to be without Internet for several weeks minimum then you could hold out, I suppose. Is there anything on roadworks.org for your road involving Virgin Media?

You cannot trust anything virgin media says. I have been lied to every single time I've ever had to contact them.

The best lie was when the idiot told me im not allowed to have a new modem for free because my devices support 802.11n wifi. Apparrently a new modem is free if you have only 802.11g devices. What a crock of ****. :D

Was also lied to when i tried cancelling my services. Because i showed interest in keeping my number they immediately held it to ransom and told me the number belongs to virgin now. Utterly disgusting company. Avoid at all costs.

Anyway back to your situation, you could be waiting up to 10 more years and beyond. No one really understands virgin media operations. They could install their cabinet and then completely forget they ever installed them. Internal communication is nonexistant at virgin media. It takes them minimum 3 months for them to even recognise an area with oversubscribed broken internet. And then they dont even fix it, they just wait another 12-18 months until a dozen people leave and ease the congestion.

Nothing on Roadworks unfortunately or openreach and all that says is We are exploring solutions. it just seems quite odd for all this to happen for something 9 months later no?

Preach! From the sounds of it i'll be better of sticking with Sky/BT. I aren't happy with me getting ****** around on the phone for almost 2 hours having to ring 0870 numbers and others that cost money and keeping me on for over a hour at a time.
