OK, so I've created a new thread as this is a very important topic.

In light of the recent vulnerability in chrome that is not just affecting Chrome but ALL Chromium based browsers as well as the recent news that Edge will be using Chromium in the future I have decided this needed it's own thread:

Very important read on why we need strong alternatives to Chrome and Chromium based browsers.

Article.

If you want to protect your freedom, privacy and choice then don't allow Google (or any one company) to became the sole arbitrator of the internet.

By keeping things open source, free and decentralized we keep companies honest and agenda less. We keep information open and available to all. The internet is built on the notion of sharing access to information. By allowing Chrome and Chromium to be the most dominant browser at the expensive of others we are giving up too much power and choice to Google and thus our freedom, choice and privacy is at risk.

Reject it. Stand up for your liberties and use non chromium based browsers!

In fact there is zero reason why a website shouldn't work in Firefox. It's an open source browser. If the web developers have used web standards in implementing their site it will work fully with Firefox and any other standards based browser. Perfection. Exactly how it should be.

I've tried to switch browsers in the past, but I always end up back on Chrome for my main web browsing. I have all of my extensions and bookmarks synced and can set up my browser simply by logging into my Google account. I found the Firefox sync implementation not to be as seamless as the Chrome version. Having said that when I am building websites, I use Firefox Developer Edition because it has some really useful tools.

If Firefox's market share grew to the size of Chrome's and became the dominant Browser, it would become the target of choice for anyone looking for security vulnerabilities to exploit. We'd be no better off. Once upon a time it was IE that everyone found holes in. Now it's Chrome.

Whatever Browser is the best at any given time will grow to have the largest market share. The only solution is to use the worst Browser possible because nobody would waste their time trying to find exploits in it. For that reason alone we should all go back to IE, which nobody uses. Well, at least until it's dominant again....

You miss the point tho. The competition switching to Chromium is crowding out those few browsers actually using an alternative engine. With all browsers switching to Chromium/Chrome we allow Google to dictate the web.

IE was not a standards complaint browser. It was also closed source. Which was why it was unhealthy for the web and riddled with holes.

If I.E had become so dominant that no one developed another browser goodness know what the internet would look like now. We'd of had MS dictating the web.:o

MS have a poor rep for a very good reason.

It's true that if FF grew to the size of Chrome it too would be a target for hacking. But then look ta Linux. The biggest player in the server space on all 500 of the top super computers and yet it is MS that is the Swiss cheese of security not Linux. So that doesn't really tell the full story.

There's a reason why FF is the defacto browser in most Linux distributions.

There is nothing wrong with Chromium (chrome is a different kettle of fish) but there is something wrong with all browsers switching to the same engine.
