WMP has made huge leaps from around verion 9, but pre version 9 it really wasnt on par with Winamp and the die hard following on winamp still exists as WMP still isnt better even if its as good.

Also got some of my housemates using it because for some reason WMP refused to play MP3s for them and WinAmp didI thought it was easier to just install WinAmp than even start to think why WMP might not be playing them...
