Why Windows 10?

My network is now bombarded daily by MS about Win10. It is not enough for MS just to install irritating icons on our taskbars, it now tells us that our PCs are compatible. Next thing it will warn us that if we don't update soon we will have to pay for an update.

I did not give MS access rights to my network. Can this be legal in UK?

Apart from all that, MS has yet to tell me why it thinks I need Win10. Apart from an obvious threat to stop supporting my current OS (W7x64), there seems no good reason to change. For a business, change means money, it means time lost through interrupted workflow etc.

If/when W7 x64 becomes outdated or unsupported, I will think seriously about getting a whizz in for week to switch our entire system over to Linux.

Re-training staff to use Linux wouldn't interrupt workflow?

Do you keep all of your machines fully up to date? (Windows Update)

Re-training would be a bind but it would be a one-off. They would have to retrain to use Win10 anyway. More importantly, I don't like MS snooping into my network.

Yes, I keep W7 up-to-date although I've had problems with some updates and had to uninstall them.

But, the questions in OP haven't been answered.

First: Was it legal for MS to access my network? I don't remember giving permission - in fact the network is behind a firewall, and is password protected at several levels. What the heck!

Second unanswered question: Why does Windows 10 exist? If there are good reasons, MS hasn't told me yet.

What do you mean they are in your network?

Make little sense without some more details.

Windows 10 exists as an entirely new platform starting from the kernel up. It will be around for a long long time without a major upgrade, all future features/fixes will be in service packs/updates done automatically.
But it mainly exists to pull people into using their software as a service and for them to make money from the store and cloud services, hence them giving it away for free.
For a business user Windows 10 will be inevitable if you want to stay with the windows eco system and also keep security updates and patches.

They are sending through notifications not accessing and snooping through your network, jesus christ.

Let's just say it's not legal and you should take action against them, let us know how that all goes.

As for going from 7 to 10, you don't have to do anything, it's not forced. Any research would show going from win whatever to 10 is easy, only about a billion articles on it, but hey, your the IT manager (I assume?)

Going by your logic, why are you not using windows 1.0? I mean, why do new versions exist? Why do you seem to be waiting for a personalised email (perhaps he should come and meet you in person? emails so are informal) from Gabe Aul on why he would like you to use windows 10.

Not IT manager. We are tiny. I have to do the best I can with limited resources.

Message on each PC saying that each is compatible with Win 10. How can it tell this without snooping?

Llamadal: Please don't take His name in vain. You insult me. I did not insult you.

Not IT manager
This much is obvious by your immediate and naive jump to paranoia around snooping. (No insult intended, just an observation).

Quite simply - Windows 10 is backwards compatible with earlier versions of Windows. If you are on Windows now with common off the shelf hardware, you will be able to run Win10. No snooping necessary.

Deep breath ...

This is how this happens

Windows update has a tick box for types of recommended updates
Accessed via control panel -> windows updates -> update settings

There are 2 basic types of updates
1. Critical ( this is for security related stuff and important bugs fixes)
2. Recommended - not required but MS want you to use them anyway

With recommended updates ticked ( which you have control over)
it will install a carppy update that advertises free upgrade to windows 10

That is where that has come from

Do the company you work for a big favour, get a professional in..... think it's expensive? Try loosing everything then getting someome to fix it.

I've seen countless companies lose stuff because little timmy ran windows update that one time, now he's the IT pro.

I mean no offence in anything ive posted, but your lack of initiative at even looking at the original concern you raised sets off alarm bells, i appreciate small company/limited stuff...etc but be honest about what you can/cant do and dont take a risk because you read it on a forum

Oh and I spoke to the internet this morning and he told me he doesn't like you bombarding it with gutter trash such as this, could you stop please as he hasn't given you permission.

If the network was a 'proper' work network IE domain then you'd not get any of this? Professional/Enterprise machines joined to a domain don't get prompted to update.

Also, I like Windows 10 (Even for Enterprise) :D

:EDIT: P.S. Love that you describe an icon on the taskbar as bombarded. Stick it to the man!
