Why wont esata work on my z68xp-ud4

Ummmm, how odd. Ive been using a 2.5" sata hdd in a usb/esata enclosure and the esata didnt work with the drive but usb did, so I thought the esata not working on the board. But Ive just tried a 3.5" sata hdd in the enclosure and the esata worked straight away?
