Right, I built a simple computer about 2 months ago and everything worked, all the hardware was compatoable and the OS installed and worked fine, i played a game on itand it worked fine. I then transported it 400 miles to my mates and set it up there and it didnt work. All the hardware was working but it was like windows had disappeared. I took out the optical drives and started it with the bare minimum and it appeared to work loading the windows 98 screen but then it went to a selection page, where you could select safe mode, normal etc. I tried both safe and normal etc. but it just said these files where missing ndis.vxd, ndis2sup.vxd, msmouse.vxd and system.drv and turned itself off and said plz reinstall windows. So i tried to reinstall windows but it wont let me, it says it cant access the hard drive. it looked like the hard drive had blown but when i went into its system on dos, it said that half the files where there. :(

WHat the hell is up with it??

PLZ HELP!!

I'd say its safe to assume the hard drive has taken a decent knock enough to damage it internally - can you hear any repetetive clicking from the drive?

Try another one(a cheap 5gb or something) just to make sure.

DOS is only listing what files are there, its not actually reading the data inside the file. When windows loads obviously its trying to load the data in the file which sounds like its corrupt.

If windows is saying it can't access the drive id definately say its the hard drive on the way out... does S.M.A.R.T say anything when your computer boots up?

Windows 98... Ah the memories of that horrible beast...

Probably give the machine a knocking and it took the Hard Drive out with it, but I have transported my machine loads of times and thats never happened to me.

Maybe the move was just enough to give it its last goodbye?

I would go to the manafacturers website and see if they have any drive testing tools.

Download and run one of them to see if the drive is OK or not.

If the drive checks out - Maybe move to Win2k or XP?

Iv tried the seagate diagnosis tool on the hard drive and the system and it says that the system is fine, but it still ownt boot in safe mode or anything. WHAT ELSE CAN BE WRONG WITH IT!!? can the hard drive still be faulty?

HELP PLZ
