Only when i'm not using it?

I don't get it, i've been having problems with it locking up, but now it only seems to do so if im not using it.

I have disabled the screen saver and all power saving options. I'll go down stairs to get a drink, when i return its totally locked up

Any ideas on what could cause this? I have only recently done a clean install

Cheers

XP64, i think something may be wrong with my hard disk, in the process of backing it up. Gonna delete the partitions, run some tests and reinstall everything.

sounds like you have a leprecon under your desk who pops out when you go away and knackers your pc :P

have you any crunching software running?

Well, here's a strange situation for you.

I had exactly the same thing... I would boot my PC into Windows and if I didn't start putting load on the CPU very quickly it would BSOD. If the processor was loaded it was fine. It behaved in pretty much the opposite way you'd expect.

Turned out the CPU had been damaged through excessive voltage at some point in its lifespan.

I think it all started when i put Vista64 on it, and it messed up the boot indentifier thingy (where it specifies partition 1=xp, 2=xp64 etc). After installing Vista i had to edit these to get xp and xp64 back. Before that it was working fine.
Somewhere along the line the partition or something got damaged, i loaded up Partition magic and it couldn't load up of view and of the hard disk so i decided to back everything up, delete all the partitions and start over.
Reinstalled xp and xp64 last night, using xp64 now and not a single problem so far :D
