For me it's Simple. If you don't vote you have no right to comment or moan about the state of the country now or in the next 4/5 years.
What if you vote for the elected party? Are you still allowed to moan about them?

1. What we've done to retain the right to vote freely
Whether you can only remember as far back as World War II or have a slightly longer memory, thousands of British people have died to ensure our generation had the right to vote freely and live in a democratic society. By exercising that right you're paying a tiny little homage to everyone who fought to ensure our country stayed free. I'd feel pretty ashamed if I didn't vote.
A sickness? Or common sense? We live in a democratic system, such as it is. Democracy doesn't work if people "can't be bothered" to vote. That is a sickening attitude. There are several ways to protest against politicians.
If you genuinely believe that non of the candidates deserve your vote, you abstain by spoiling your ballot paper. It's really quite simple, not turning up to vote is a disgrace, and should be illegal.

It's my life mate, i'd rather enjoy going out with friends to the pub and on holiday, playing games, going to work and getting the job done and coming back home, taking care of myself by going to the gym and eating healthy, spending time with my pets and my family, you still think that's a sad way to lead my life? Caring for those close to me and enjoying time with my friends and by myself? Or have you got a regime which i could follow till the day i die which would include sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what the next political outcome is?
You realise that democratic countries like Australia have compulsory voting, if you don't vote you get fined, simple really.Well said. Making not voting illegal is thoroughly laughable. How are they going to enforce it? Little black vans that go around the streets rounding people up? What a total joke!
Yes it is your life and how you chose to live it is entirely up to you.
BUT when your pint of beer costs more due to tax, when your job is on the line because the company you work for cannot get loans from the bank, or cannot compete against cheap foreign imports, when your holiday company goes bust whilst you are out in Greece or your aircraft flight is taxed at a higher rate, when your car tax goes up, your local Hospital that will look after your friends and family closes down, when you get a Nuclear power station built on your doorstep - don't start moaning.....
Ignoring your personal attacks, compulsory voting is in use in other democratic systems, and anyone not voting gets fined.Your post is full of ****. Members of a democracy have a democratic right to vote or not vote as they see fit. To say it should be illegal to not vote is nothing short of retarded and would bring police involvement into the voting process. That is no longer a democracy you donkey. Maybe we should have special Election Police who can drag you off in the middle of the night for not voting. Should we beat them for it? Or perhaps we should just incarcerate them in Gulags. Voter apathy is regrettable and whilst it may not count in the tallying up process, it is still a statement from hundreds of thousands who say they don't care or are distrustful of the system but you know what? They still pay their taxes, they still pay their NI, they still pay their council tax, they still claim benefits, they are still part of society. They just chose not to vote and that's their right, now back off.

Is Australia a democracy or not? It is recognised as one and has compulsory voting, the two therefore are not mutually exclusive. This isn't Australia. Just because they do it, doesn't make it right.
