I am wanting to move my computer out of a room into another room for a few months and use wi-fi to connect to the internet.

can i use a base unit (or something) for the wi-fi plugged into the adsl modem in the other room and the computer can wirelessly connect to that?

Or do you have to have one computer wire connected to the internet and go through that (i.e. atleast 2 computers)?

Is there anything i need to know before purchasing wi-fi?

As i say i just want one computer to connect via WI-FI to my current BT broadband connection. I am just abit lost as i have only previously looked into computer to computer wi-fi.

What modem is it? Chances are it will not work with any kind of wireless access point directly, your best bet would be to buy a cheap ADSL wireless router, this will do everything you require

Hello
I'm no expert - unless you count having a network of 2 wired and 1 wireless PCs going in to my router, but I would say that you have nothing to worry about if you just want a single wirelessed PC. You're only going to be theoretically worse off when internet speeds start exceding 100Mbit. That's a way off, so really if it's just for an internet connection you could get away with an old 802.11b 11Mbit router that some people are probably taking to the dump.
Just looked on OCUK products and they've got loads of routers for you. I hadn't realised prices were that low. Lucky git ;)
However, troubleshooting without a wired in PC might be pretty difficult (not possible at all if wireless security had gone wrong). So just be aware that you might have to wire up to fix problems. You can borrow the 30metre ehternet cable that the NTL engineer left me the other day if you like!
I just thought - is there no telephone point near your computer? If there is then you would be better off siting your router next to your PC and go wired - less security issues. Perhaps you have a laptop?
Don't use WEP for security. Use at least WPA with a pre shared key (PSK). Wikipedia has some good advice/links for choosing the key.
You might also want to look at routers with USB ports on them. Mine has 2 ports, with one having a printer connected to it, which is much better printer sharing than in the old days when a PC had to be powered up just to let the other PCs in. For the other port I could connect up an external HDD that would allow me to carry out very convenient regular data backups, or file sharing e.g. photos, music. I really must do this! Am tempting fate at the moment! There are also devices that allow you play music off of the router from connected PCs.
Cheers
