I'm on a course for a couple of weeks and I'm staying in a guest house. There is wi-fi here but the signal for me is very low. Is there anything I can do at my end to try and get a better signal? I was hoping to play WoW at night to pass the hours but the lag is terrible.

Only the obvious stuff like moving your computer around the room to find the strongest signal area. If you can't get physical access to the wireless source then that's about all you can do.
Some wireless cards come with an antenna connection that would allow you to put a hign gain antenna on, but again, not sure how much difference that would make with you being a wireless client, they're more for wireless hosts like a router.
