Long story short, my computer is in a room away from the router. A wireless option is my only choice. My wireless PCI adapter is 5ghz but my router is not. I can get pretty bad lag during the evening when trying to play games over wifi. My download speed is only 4mb. I was wondering if a 5ghz router would improve my connection stability? I also looked at powerline adapters but I would be unable to plug either into a main socket (they'd have to go into extension sockets).

If you've only got 4Mbit to play with 2.4GHz wireless should be fine unless you're in an area that's flooded with other 2.4GHz networks.

5GHz could get you a cleaner channel, but the signal is much more easily blocked.

You can get Powerline adapters with a pass through mains socket which could avoid you having to plug them into an extension lead. Example here.

If it's feasible I'd start with a temporary hardwired connection. Ethernet cables are cheap (even long ones) and you'd get a proper baseline. If you still have the problem with a wired connection there's no point changing anything.

5GHz is more susceptible to distance and objects (walls).

If you are having latency problems with 2.4GHz, you are certain that it's LAN side, and you are a distance from the source, then moving to 5GHz is not likely to rectify the problem.

If you want to game with the lowest possible latency, cable up.

I would go with this if you can't lay a cable directly to the router.

Exactly how far are you from the router? How many walls between it and you? How thick are the walls? If you're really far then 5GHz may not help at all since it has lower penetration than 2.4GHz, meaning lower range.

Powerlines could be a good candidate. One room across means the wiring between the rooms should be pretty uncomplicated. (AFAIK anyway but I'm no sparky.)

I think I'm gonna try powerline adapters. There really is no reasonable way for me to run an Ethernet cable across the rooms. I just tried playing CSGO this evening and the lag was unbearable. It's always fine though after about 11pm, so I assume this is an issue with devices using up the 2.4ghz signal.

It could also be the lack of QoS from the sounds of things, what ISP, package and router is it and how any people live in the same place?
