Hi all,

The wi-fi reception appears to be getting increasingly bad on my 2009 iMac 21.5" - or at least it seems that way...

Often, I'll be able to see my network, but the connection will keep timing out when I try to connect. Often a router reboot will get things working again. I'll notice similar behaviour on my iP4 also - which makes me think its the router itself to blame.

Its a standard Sky router using wireless g iirc. My house is a new build so the walls shouldn't be blocking signal particularly. Am I likely to see a significant wi-fi stability increase if I were to upgrade to a wireless N router? There are so many Sky wi-fi networks in my area, and although I often change the outbound channel on the router, I think there must be a fair amount of interference across the standard frequency ranges.

The other option would be ethernet over power adapters, which probably seem like the best idea right now.

Cheers,

Grant

It does sound like your router. You can check the signal strength of your connection when you do connect by holding 'option' and clicking on the airport icon on the task bar.

Ignore the iphone 4, that's not a benchmark, wifi on the iphone plain doesn't work correctly in a B/G environment.

Maybe post your router details in the networking forum? I'm not familiar with the standard sky router, but I know some unbranded ISP routers can be reflashed to their original brand firmware, unlocking features and stability. (Or you could just save yourself the hassle and buy a proper router! :p)

If you don't mind paying for them and have enough plug sockets those plug in adapters are pretty good. I fitted them for someone who had an older house with solid walls which even 802.11n was struggling with and I've not heard anything since (in a good way) :p
