Anyone got experience of buying and installing a new kitchen from Wicks? 50% off the units and 25% off installation seems a good deal. Plus they do tilling, flooring etc which other fitters don't.

Do you have a plan in mind? with measurements?

If your competent enough to order the stuff yourself, then http://www.diy-kitchens.com is totally kick ass. Decent carcasses, hinges and all round a lot better than the stuff you get from the big sheds. From experience. Worked out cheaper too.

Then just find a local decent cheapy to do the rest for you.

Finding a decent local chap easier said then done. I have an inherit distrust off all tradesmen!

Plus the stuff never fits 100%, always one corner with nothing off the shelves fits into.

I'd go with a local guy every time. While fitting from the likes of Wickes may seem reasonable to start with they'll generally charge an arm and a leg for simple things. Need a socket moved, that'll be £100, need 2 moved, that'll be £200. I don't think so!

The only part I'd get someone in for is the mitering / biscuiting of the worktops, the rest I'd do myself, once you break a kitchen down into it's parts it's very simple, I'd say more simple than an Ikea wardrobe.

That's why finding a decent chippy helps. I had a 400mm unit that overlapped a bit of boxed out wall that was some pipework and there was also an awkwardly placed stop ****. The chippy hacked the back of the unit out and fitted it perfectly around the wall. Once the doors on, you can hardly tell, and it's a fairly useful cupboard.

Thanks for posting that, I have a kitchen to do soon, I think I will use them :)

I had to do something very similar when I fitted a kitchen for my mum, working around a pillar that was supporting an RSJ for the extension.

As said, kitchens are fairly simple to knock together if you have moderate DIY skills.

Let me know how it goes, I've got a basket full of stuff waiting for some building work to be done. Works out £1k less than Howdens and that's with inframe stuff.

It wont be for a few months, the place it will be installed at is still going through legalities. :-/
