Wide Angle Lens Help

OK without sounding to stupid

What makes an aftermarket lens wide angle, i have a stock 18-55mm Lens but if i was to get a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC OS Lens for Sony would this shoot much wider shots? Going by the 17mm over my 18mm? Or am I missing something? Thanks

What camera model are you using?

As the size of the sensor comes into play quite significantly the closer you get to the wide end of things. If you are using a crop sensor, 18mm on your kit lens isn't really 18mm.

You can get the Tokina 11-16 for the Sony. Good lens but not very cheap.

Thanks i will look that up now, im just not happy with the stock Sony lens, it could be me but im sure you get what you pay for :s
