I was thinking of buying a VA1912w-2 from Viewsonic

Until I did a google that is and found this thread.

I currently have a CRT so don't really know much about this subject.

I presumed that if you don't want to use the native resolution of the monitor (ie 1440*900) but preferred to use 1024*768 the the screen would just adjust and show black borders but that doesn't seem to be the case, or is it just this specfic monitor. I'm looking to spend no more than 230€ (£154 incl Delivery) and this one comes in on budget anyone have experience of viewsonic widescreens?

no 19in ws will show a black border. they all stretch to fit.

but that's no problem. most games support 1440x900 nowadays or can even be tweaked a little if they don't do it by default....

the only game i have which won't play in widescreen is pro evo5 and that still looks great when set to 1152x864 and stretched to fit (i have a 19in ws too).

you can check whether your games are supported here....

also the 7600gt in your sig is enough to power most games at the native res of 1440x900 with medium to high details. :D

I was just fiddling with the scaling in the nvidia control panel...and wasnt getting the black lines on my N91W....I see or at least I think i was seeing it stretched! but why wont it just put black lines there?

Afaik there are no 19" WS which support 1:1 pixel mapping in the OSD and many of those apparently don't support software (driver/graphics card) scaling either.

As already mentioned the screen automatically will stretch to fit if you use a resolution like 1024 x 768 but depending on the game it may look noticably distorted (cos of the 16:10 aspect ratio on the WS), which imo is usually most annoying with the UI rather than the actual "picture", but hey :p

You can also have that effect when running a game in 1440 x 900 cos even though it may be native the game might not be designed for a screen that wide, so your field of view can be messed up. It isn't supported to change it on quite a few games but with newer ones the support is getting better and better, many with a native "widescreen" mode (instead of just a res hack).

Have a look at Baddass' site for more info and handy write-ups ;)
