Wider prime for Nikon DX?

Hey all.

I'm very new to photography (recently got a D3200 with 18-55mm, 35mm f/1.8 and a 55-300mm on the way) and I'm wondering why Nikon don't seem so offer a cheap 22/24mm prime like they do with the 35mm. The 35mm f/1.8 DX is getting a 52.5mm "equivalent" on a full-frame camera (1.5x crop) and I'd need a 22/24mm prime to get the 35mm "equivalent". I know I have the kit lens and can get that to 24mm but I'll be limited to a minimum of f/4 and while that isn't too bad, I guess it would be nice to be able to drop a couple of stops to f/2 or lower.

Does anyone know of such a prime for a DX Nikon?

Best best is the new Nikon 20mm f/1.8 FX lens. Not the same price band as the 35mm DX but looks to be a great lens.

There are also the older 20mm and 24mm AF-D lenses. These won't autofocus on your camera but for landscape use they are very good.

But TBH, your best bet is just to save up and buy the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens. You get an 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm and 35mm set of equivalent prime Lenses all at f/1.8 and all very sharp.

Cheers. That Sigma definitely looks great but quite expensive. One for the future I think - my photography is absolutely pants at the moment and I think I've got a decent range of equipment to get plenty of practise with for now.

I just expected that Nikon would have a "cheap prime" for the wider end like they do with the 35mm f/1.8 given the crop factor.

Unfortunately neither Canon or Nikon have bothered making primes for crop cameras yet, Sony is not really any better. Fuji and Samsung are doing much better, and Olympus and Panasonic are doing lots of equivalent primes for m43 cameras.

Nikon can be applauded for updating and relaxing a near complete dual line-up of both f/1.4 and f/1.8 lenses of very high quality, and a dedicated DX 35mm. Canon also have some nice pancake primes released and older f/1.8 wide primes. Still neither company have any of the 14mm, 16mm, 20mm DX primes that are much wanted.

Yeah there's definitely not too many wide prime options for crop sensors for Canon. I have a Canon 10-22mm for when I want very wide but other than that my Sigma 18-35mm lens gets used instead :)

From my own experience, there's no point buying twice so you might as well try and go for the Sigma :) You can learn with any lens so it just comes down to cash really... As per usual lol

I adore my Nikon 35mm f/1.8 - only just started photography and it probably gets trounced by the Sigma but for £128 it is a great lens!
